Background / History

Aizen enters the True Spirit Arts Academy as Lu Li’s roommate. He presents himself as a friendly, modest first-year, trains diligently at night, and begins teaching Lu Li Zanpakutō fundamentals, Reiatsu cultivation, and Kidō theory. Even then, he hides much of his ability, including his mastery of Shikai. 5 12 13

After Lu Li disappears from the Shinigami world for eighty years, Aizen advances through the Gotei 13 and becomes Fifth Division lieutenant. He remembers Lu Li as a rare fellow genius whose company relieved the isolation of being exceptional, but eventually assumes that Lu Li died in Hueco Mundo. 299 302

Aizen’s research leads him to conclude that pure Shinigami possess inherent limits. He subdues Baraggan, establishes a Hueco Mundo research institute, recruits Szayelaporro as an assistant, and investigates the boundary between Shinigami and Hollows.
