Background / History
Kaido became his kingdom's foremost warrior at age ten and led it through numerous victories. Rather than earning affection, his strength made others fear him; the kingdom's king eventually betrayed him and handed him to the Navy. This experience shaped both his isolation and his conviction that absolute power is what changes the world 137.
As a pirate, Kaido repeatedly challenged the Navy alone. He was reportedly captured 18 times, endured more than a thousand tortures, received 40 death sentences, and destroyed nine massive prison ships; neither execution methods nor his own attempts could kill him 140.
Kaido established the Beasts Pirates in Wano Country, initially treating the nation primarily as a factory base and power-accumulation stronghold. He delegated much of its administration to Kurozumi Orochi, while directly operating Udon Prison under a “more work, more reward” policy 165. His original goal was to build a powerful Devil Fruit army, but Lu Li exposed the Artificial Devil Fruit enterprise as an expensive and ineffective scheme that chiefly benefited Doflamingo and Caesar. Kaido responded by ending the operation 164.
Appearance
Kaido is an exceptionally tall, heavily muscled Oni whose physical presence intimidates ordinary people before he attacks. In battle, his body is covered in blue-green scales and develops a dragon tail; he can also become a massive Azure Dragon 154 179.
- Often carries a large spiked club into battle 179 465.
- His bare upper body displays densely knotted musculature 508.
- His Conqueror’s Haki manifests as dark-red lightning around his body and weapon 179.
- His Azure Dragon form is capable of carrying multiple people through the air 172 481.
Personality
Kaido initially judges people primarily by power. He is tolerant of capable officers, does not enforce rigid forms of address, and actively seeks strong people to join his crew 137 166. He views strength as inseparable from loneliness, reflecting the fear and betrayal he experienced as a child soldier 137.
Despite his brutal reputation, Kaido is protective of people he accepts as his own. He worries about Yamato’s isolation, is pleased by her attempt to reconcile with him, and personally leads the Beasts Pirates to rescue Lu Li when he learns the World Government secretly imprisoned him 137 148 452. He also shows fatherly interest in Ulti and Page One’s development 174.
Kaido is impatient with administration and initially prioritizes immediate strength and industrial profit over long-term governance. Under Lu Li’s influence, he becomes willing to confront Wano’s famine, corruption, pollution, and public hostility, though he often needs detailed explanations and prepared speeches to do so 149 163 170. His core ambition remains the overthrow of the Celestial Dragons and the creation of a world where status is determined by individual ability rather than tribute or birth 180 481.

Armament Haki and Ryūō
Kaido combines high-level Armament Haki with Ryūō to reinforce his body and weapon in direct combat 135 179.
- Used Ryūō against Yamato during their childhood fights, unintentionally giving her the experience through which she learned it 135.
- Coats his spiked club with Ryūō for attacks such as Thunder Bagua 179.

Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Spiked club — Kaido’s primary weapon; used with Armament Haki, Ryūō, and Conqueror’s Haki coating 179 465.
- Beasts Pirates main warship — His crew’s principal vessel for major expeditions and military operations 174 179.
Relationships
- Yamato — His daughter. Their relationship was hostile for years, but Yamato apologized and reconciled with him; Kaido restored her status as Oni Princess and later promoted her as Wano’s general 148 171.
- Lu Li — Initially a prisoner who tried to assassinate him, then became Kaido’s trusted strategist and All-Star. Kaido rewarded him with an Ancient Zoan Devil Fruit, trained him, and launched a campaign to rescue him from Marineford 148 155 175 452.
- King — Kaido’s right-hand man and sworn brother. Kaido openly worries when King is injured and relies on him during major operations 155 172.
- Fujitora (Issho) — Kaido welcomed him as the Fifth All-Star after he accepted their shared goal of overthrowing the Celestial Dragons. Fujitora often mediates Kaido’s impulsiveness 180 452.

- Whitebeard — A former shipmate and later ally. Whitebeard secretly arranged for Kaido to take over his territories if he fell, and the two fought alongside each other at Marineford 452 465.
- Shanks — Initially blocked Kaido near Elbaf, believing he intended to seize Whitebeard’s territory. Kaido later requested passage through Elbaf to reach Marineford and rescue Lu Li 452.
- Doflamingo — A trading partner whose Artificial Devil Fruit business deceived and angered Kaido once its poor returns and combat value became clear 164 175.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Wano Reformation
Kaido observes Lu Li’s conversations with Yamato and recognizes that Lu Li can reach her in a way the Beasts Pirates cannot. He begins reconsidering Yamato’s isolation and permits Lu Li to remain alive rather than forcing him into the crew 137.
After Yamato reconciles with him, Kaido releases Lu Li from Udon Prison, tests his will with Conqueror’s Haki, and asks for his views on Wano’s rule 148. He then assigns Lu Li and Yamato the task of removing Orochi, making their freedom conditional on proving they can govern effectively 151.
When Orochi is killed, Kaido endorses Yamato as Wano’s Shogun and accelerates food deliveries. Lu Li’s efficiency earns Kaido’s deep trust, leading him to treat Lu Li as an equal and reward him with an Ancient Zoan Devil Fruit 154 155.
Beasts Pirates Expansion
Kaido accepts Lu Li’s economic and military recommendations: reforming factories, importing food, training workers, and replacing the Artificial Devil Fruit project with more profitable industries and elite recruitment 156 163 166. He appoints Lu Li as his strategist and the Fourth Calamity, giving him broad authority over Wano’s reforms 167.
Kaido gradually shifts his public image by funding housing, supporting sewage treatment, personally distributing housing deeds, and publicly admitting Wano’s past hardships. The people eventually hail him as “Guardian Deity, Myōō Kaido” 170 171.
Marineford Rescue
After learning that Lu Li survived and had been secretly imprisoned by the World Government for a decade, Kaido abandons his restraint and asks Shanks for passage to Marineford. He declares that the World Government’s attack on his subordinate warrants its destruction 452.
Kaido arrives at Marineford with the Beasts Pirates, attacks Admirals Aokiji and Kizaru, and effortlessly incapacitates Gecko Moria 465. His intervention shifts the war’s balance and confirms his willingness to fight for his crew rather than merely pursue territory or power 465 467.
Overthrow of the World Government
Kaido expands the Beasts Pirates with powerful recruits, including Aokiji as the Eighth All-Star, Frost Calamity 497. He joins Lu Li and their allied forces in the final assault on Mary Geoise, personally battling Sengoku while his crew attacks the Holy Land 508 510.
Kaido and Lu Li confront Imu during the final conflict. Following Imu’s defeat, Kaido becomes the leader of a new joint government that outlaws piracy and enforces peace across the Four Seas 514.
