Background / History

Akainu reacted with fury when Lowett broke through the Navy blockade and vowed to capture him, establishing an early hostility toward the Black Count 73.

During the Whole Cake Island campaign, he fought alongside Aokiji against the BIG·MOM Pirates. Katakuri was unable to withstand him without Lowett’s intervention, and Akainu exchanged direct attacks with BIG·MOM using his magma powers 269 278. After BIG·MOM’s defeat, he attempted to turn on Lowett when the Black Count announced his claim to Whole Cake Island, but Garp prevented an immediate attack because Lowett held Alabasta’s soldiers hostage 283 284.

Following Sengoku’s death in the New World war, the World Government appointed Akainu as Fleet Admiral. His reputation for decisiveness, ruthlessness, and uncompromising justice made the appointment a source of fear among pirates 378.

Personality

Akainu is defined by an uncompromising view of justice. He believes the Navy must destroy piracy to protect ordinary people from the casualties, raids, and chaos caused by pirates and revolutionary conflicts—even when that duty requires executing opponents he respects 497.

His severity does not prevent him from acknowledging strength or devotion. He respects Roger and Whitebeard as individuals while insisting that pirate rule must end, and he recognizes Aokiji’s importance even while condemning his departure from the Navy 395 497.

As Fleet Admiral, he is demanding but personally accountable. He rejects making subordinates take responsibility for his decisions, pushes for the Navy’s independence and strength, and intervenes to save Kizaru when the latter hesitates against Lowett 450 522.
