Background
Yuanshi is one of the Three Pure Ones alongside his elder brother Li Er and younger brother Tongtian. Before their sects were established, he and Tongtian cultivated at Qilin Cliff on Kunlun Mountain, attempting to comprehend the Primordial Violet Qi while wondering how far Li Er had progressed on the path to Sainthood. Yuanshi admired Li Er's cultivation but was troubled by the possibility that the Three Pure Ones would no longer advance as one. 1
After Li Er's confrontation with Hongjun created an exception to the heavenly mandate, Yuanshi and Tongtian consulted their elder brother but ultimately followed their own paths. Yuanshi founded the Heavenly Origin Sect and attained Sainthood. 10
Personality
Yuanshi is stern, proud, and intensely conscious of status, legitimacy, and the orthodox standing of his lineage. His attempt to secure Kunlun Mountain was driven not only by territory, but by his wish to establish the Heavenly Origin Sect's moral authority within the Daoist tradition. 14
He is ambitious enough to challenge even Li Er, hoping that the Chaos Bell and Pangu Banner could provide an opportunity to surpass his elder brother. His defeat by Li Er instead made the gulf between their realms unmistakable. 20 21
Despite his severity, Yuanshi is protective of those he accepts as family. He praised Xuandu's potential, promised not to pursue Ancestor Minghe on Xuandu's behalf, and instructed him to settle that grievance himself after achieving sufficient cultivation. 13 This protectiveness does not extend to traitors: when Randeng and four Golden Immortals conspired to defect, Yuanshi personally consigned them to the Investiture of the Gods Platform. 62
