The Emperor had recruited the first five thousand Astartes from Siban Province, and he had been one of them.

During the Unification Wars, they had been formed into the only Astartes Legion, fighting at The Emperor's side.

Meriel's early life had risen smoothly through the ranks. In only fourteen years, he had gone from commanding ten men to overseeing an entire Chapter.

But after the appearance of Lion El'Jonson, the one known as the Primarch, his life had taken a sharp turn downward.
