Background / History

Nimrod remade the Reapers into the Shadow of Order after receiving new black armor marked with the Black Emperor emblem. He ordered the legion’s armor, ships, and vehicles repainted black, establishing the force’s new identity and visual doctrine. The legion subsequently transferred to a Relic-class flagship. Twelve company captains were present for the announcement, initially meeting the reforms with some resistance before accepting them. 81

The legion’s early Honor Guard became a prominent symbol of its service. During the Wheel of Fire campaign, more than 500 Honor Guard members answered Wilshire’s call as both “Shadow of Order” and “the Monarch’s Honor Guard.” A later Sol parade included 3,010 Honor Guard veterans; each had killed at least 100 Orks, while 130 bore Iron Halos personally awarded by Nimrod. 210 258

The Shadow of Order developed into a force defined as much by governance, industry, and research as conquest. Its promotion standards evaluated results in worlds brought under its rule, while agreements with the League of Votann enabled access to Squat manufacturing and equipment. By the time Perturabo visited the Squat capital, legionaries were carrying enlarged Eta-Kharn-pattern plasma guns and Bedrock-pattern bolters. 413

Later expansion included the conversion of more than 36,000 Faceless Ones into Shadows of Order through mental modification. The legion also began mass deployment of Ring Weapons and continued strengthening its armor, fleet, and forge capacity. 705 724
