Background / History

Shi Sheng entered the Brocade Guard without powerful connections. He was known for being upright, inflexible, and hostile to evil; although his merits accumulated, these qualities made him difficult for the organization to accommodate. A dossier compiled by Ye Liufeng dismissed him as “uneducated, inflexible, incapable of great things,” an assessment that reflected the Guard’s contempt for his work-first approach rather than his combat ability. 5 6

His refusal to overlook crime regardless of social rank repeatedly put him in danger. After arresting the son of the Wan Shun Marquis, Shi Sheng initially rejected Ye Liuyun’s decision to release the nobleman, but calmed after understanding that the aristocracy would prevent any lasting punishment. He accepted that arresting offenders could still matter even when the system would ultimately protect them. 10

After becoming Ye Liuyun’s subordinate, Shi Sheng openly warned that he would continue arresting lawbreakers even if doing so caused trouble for his new superior.
