The referee glanced at the two entrances to the arena, checked the time, then called out loudly, "Will the mages for the match please enter!"
Olga Marie emerged calmly from one of the tunnels and walked to the center of the arena.
Olga Marie swept her gaze over the densely packed crowd in the stands, then spotted Lord Einolai in the VIP section. Her nervous hands clenched together.
Though she came from a distinguished family, Olga Marie was only a twelve-year-old girl who had never weathered any real storms. It was perfectly normal for her to get stage fright in such a grand setting.
Calm down, Marie. Your opponent is just the child of some mercenary with no proper background. There's no need to fear him. You're fighting this battle to prove yourself. As long as I show Father my best side, he'll surely change his mind. Olga Marie kept encouraging herself inwardly, and her trembling hands gradually steadied.
Theresa, the female secretary seated in the nearby stands, nodded affirmatively at Olga Marie. Encouraged by that gesture, Olga Marie's confidence immediately soared, and her expression regained its usual pride and composure.
Section 73. Duel (3)
Seeing Olga Marie regain her confidence, Theresa sighed in relief, though she still felt somewhat uneasy.
Theresa was a Magus with Future Sight. However, her Future Sight was predictive in nature and could only randomly show her possible futures.
As for the outcome of this battle, Theresa had happened not to see it.
Although Theresa still had doubts about the result, she remained confident in Olga Marie's abilities.
Though Olga Marie was not favored by her father, Lord Animusphere, she had at least received the finest magecraft education since childhood. Coupled with her considerable talent, she had few rivals among those her age.
Theresa had also specifically investigated Olga Marie's opponent in this duel, Uchiha Kanade, Luvia's mercenary.
According to the intelligence she had obtained, Uchiha Kanade had been born into an exceedingly distant branch of the Edelfelt Family in Japan, Far East. His parents had both died when he was young. After inheriting the family's Mage Crest, he had spent several years fighting in the Middle East before recently being summoned back by the Edelfelt Family to become Luvia's personal bodyguard.
It was difficult to imagine that a twelve-year-old Magus had actually experienced war in the Middle East. Yet for some reason, when people saw him in person, they instinctively felt that it was perfectly normal. Uchiha Kanade carried himself nothing like an inexperienced child; instead, he resembled a highly capable mercenary. No one could afford to underestimate him.
(Akatsuki's Red Cloud Robe is awesome!)
Theresa uneasily pinched the bridge of her nose and kept reassuring herself. Stop being paranoid, Theresa. The enemy is just a country bumpkin who spent a few years as a mercenary. How could he possibly be a match for the great Animusphere Family? Have faith in Marie.
Naturally, the information Theresa possessed about Higashino Kanade had been fabricated by Luvia.
Since Luvia had imagined Higashino Kanade to be some Phantasmal Species that had appeared out of nowhere, she naturally spent a great deal of money to forge a suitable identity for him in order to eliminate a potential competitor, concealing the fact that Higashino Kanade was a Phantasmal Species.
Though the forged records were indeed somewhat absurd, every part of his supposed history could be verified. Combined with Akatsuki's Red Cloud Robe, an item that made others fill in the blanks about him themselves, far fewer people questioned his background.
On the other side of the arena, Higashino Kanade slowly emerged.
A spotlight shone down on him, while the cheers and heated discussions of the audience filled his ears. In this circular venue resembling an ancient Roman colosseum, Higashino Kanade felt as if he had returned to the days of the Chunin Exams.
"Things have changed," Higashino Kanade could not help sighing.
The venue followed the same familiar format, but everyone had changed. The one overseeing the battle from the highest seat was no longer Teacher Tsunade, but an elderly woman he did not recognize.
For a moment, Higashino Kanade found himself missing his home in Konoha.
Though he did not have much attachment to Konoha itself, he had spent twenty years there and knew quite a few people. Teacher Tsunade, whom he deeply respected, was there as well.
If he went back now, the Fourth Shinobi War should have long since ended, and Konoha should be in the era of Kakashi as Hokage.
As Higashino Kanade thought about it, he could not help laughing at himself.
He had already died at Uchiha Madara's hands, so why was he still dwelling on the Naruto world? Had he not been beaten badly enough, or was living off women in the Nasuverse not sweet enough?
For now, all he needed to do was make sure he survived, then work hard to live a good life.
Having figured that out, Higashino Kanade unconsciously quickened his pace, and a trace of clarity appeared in his eyes.
"Uchiha! I bet one million dollars on you to win, so don't hold back!" Luvia waved at Higashino Kanade from the stands.
"Oh, and your current odds are five to one!"
Damn! I forgot to bet on myself. What a huge loss!
Higashino Kanade clenched his fists unwillingly. He had never expected gambling to be involved in fights between mages.
Seeing Higashino Kanade's fists trembling, Olga Marie assumed he was afraid and could not help sneering, "It's not too late to surrender. That way, no one can accuse me afterward of bullying a newcomer without any foundation."
Higashino Kanade looked at Olga Marie in confusion. Was this girl really that confident?
Also, why was she still not wearing red stockings today? One-star review!
"Wait! There's something I'd like to say before the match begins." Higashino Kanade raised a hand to stop her. A bold idea had suddenly occurred to him.
"What? Do you want to admit defeat and have your master take your place?"
"No. I just think there's no point in winning a match with no stakes. How about we add a little wager?" Higashino Kanade calmly shook his head.
"What wager?"
"Simply put, if you win, I'll agree to one condition of yours for free. If I win, you'll agree to one condition of mine for free. As long as it doesn't endanger the other person's life. How about it?"
"Heh, do you really think I'd lose?" Olga Marie snorted unhappily, then declared fiercely, "Fine, I accept. I hope you won't regret it. The price for insulting the Animusphere Family is very steep!"
"We can begin now."
Higashino Kanade signaled to the referee.
"The only rule of this match is that you may not endanger your opponent's life. Other than that, do as you please," the referee said.
After speaking, the referee retreated to the edge of the arena and motioned for the two opponents to move beyond the yellow lines and maintain a safe distance.
"My Sharingan's debut is finally here. Whether I can become famous throughout the Clock Tower depends on this match."
Higashino Kanade suppressed his excitement and activated his Sharingan.
"That's... a Mystic Eye!"
Olga Marie cried out. Having never seen much of the world, she immediately began panicking again.
"Duel, begin!"
At the referee's command, the shuriken in Higashino Kanade's hand had already flown out.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Three sharp sounds rang out. Before Olga Marie could react, the Mage's Garment protecting her had activated on its own, knocking away the lethal strike for her.
"Wait... I still..."
Before she could utter the words "wasn't ready," a rain of black shuriken had already descended.
Olga Marie hurriedly activated a defensive spell. A circular magic formation appeared in front of her, deflecting every shuriken rushing toward her.
Before Olga Marie could breathe a sigh of relief, the deflected shuriken gained momentum again in midair. Dozens of shuriken curved around and stabbed toward Olga Marie's back. This was Higashino Kanade's Shuriken Manipulation Technique.
Cries of alarm erupted from the audience. It was their first time seeing anyone fight by throwing weapons like this.
Just as many people believed Olga Marie could not block such a strange attack, a golden magic formation symbolizing the twelve signs of the zodiac unfolded beneath her feet. It formed a cylindrical barrier of light that protected her entire body.
As expected, the shuriken were deflected once again.
Higashino Kanade released the wires controlling the shuriken from his hand and watched with interest as Olga Marie maintained the magic formation that resembled celestial bodies in orbit.
"Don't underestimate me! I'm Lord Animusphere's daughter, after all!"
Olga Marie glared at the relaxed-looking Higashino Kanade, feeling as though her dignity had been insulted.
Was she really that inadequate? Why could her enemy not show even the slightest bit of caution?
Section 74. Duel (4)
Olga Marie was furious at feeling that she had not been taken seriously.
Whether it was her father or mere strangers, she, Olga Marie, had clearly worked so hard. Why could she never receive the treatment she deserved? Even if it was only feigned respect, it would have been enough!
Olga Marie's heart turned cold. She decided not to hold back any longer. She would use this battle to prove that everyone else was wrong!
Olga Marie formed her hand into a gun and pointed it at Higashino Kanade. A crimson magic bullet rapidly gathered at her fingertip before firing out.
With a sharp whoosh, the magic bullet tore through the air and shot toward Higashino Kanade at a speed no slower than a fired bullet.
Under the Sharingan's powerful perception, even a bullet's speed looked like slow motion. Higashino Kanade merely tilted his head and easily evaded it.
Boom! A deep hole the size of a basketball appeared in the stone wall behind Higashino Kanade, and scorching white smoke drifted out from it.
"How did he dodge it? Why didn't he use defensive magecraft to block it?" Olga Marie asked, utterly confused.
She knew perfectly well how fast her magic bullets were. Mages who neglected physical training rarely chose to dodge, because they could not dodge. Thus, they generally used defensive magecraft to counterattack.
Those who chose to evade were either unorthodox close-combat mages or Holy Church Executors with exceptionally powerful physiques.
So the enemy is most likely a close-combat mage? I can't let him get near me.
Olga Marie swiftly made her judgment. While reinforcing her defensive spell, she launched another attack against Higashino Kanade with her magic bullets.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
A barrage of magic bullets shot toward Higashino Kanade, their firepower as dense as a rifle spraying bullets.
Higashino Kanade did not use ninjutsu to defend himself. Instead, he calmly evaded, his movements as graceful as a dance and his expression as relaxed as if he were strolling through his own garden.
A continuous series of explosions sounded behind Higashino Kanade. The thick stone wall was blasted full of holes, becoming as miserable as a battlefield that had been shelled by artillery. Yet Higashino Kanade had not suffered even the slightest damage to his clothes.
"How can this be?! With such dense attacks, even a Holy Church Executor would be injured, wouldn't they? Why is he completely fine? He hasn't even moved from that spot?"
Fine sweat seeped from Olga Marie's forehead. The scene before her felt as unreal as a dream.
In those short two minutes, she had fired at least two hundred magic bullets. Even a Dead Apostle should have been blown to ashes by now, yet Higashino Kanade still stood there unscathed, showing no intention of attacking.
"Is it a Mystic Eye?!" Olga Marie asked.
Higashino Kanade nodded and calmly replied, "My Sharingan possesses extremely powerful perception. Even bullets move in slow motion in my eyes. Your attacks can't hit me."
The moment Higashino Kanade said this, a wave of discussion rose from the audience.
Mystic Eyes were rare even in the magecraft world. Many impoverished mages might never own a pair in their entire lives, much less a pair like Higashino Kanade's, suited for combat support.
"Why are you telling me your secret? Are you looking down on me?" Olga Marie became angry instead of pleased.
She had merely probed him casually and had not expected a real answer. Yet Higashino Kanade had unexpectedly revealed one of his trump cards. How little did he think of her to do something like that?
The always cautious Higashino Kanade naturally would not reveal his trump card to an enemy for no reason. What would be the difference between that and a villain giving the protagonist a chance to strike back?
However, Higashino Kanade's goal today was not merely to win the duel. He also wanted to publicize his Sharingan, so exposing its abilities and drawing the attention of those who coveted it was necessary.
To ensure that this Sharingan performance would be even more shocking, Higashino Kanade decided to say something flashy and heighten the spectacle.
"If I don't make things difficult for myself, wouldn't this match be too boring?"
Higashino Kanade helplessly spread his hands, revealing the Uchiha clan's signature cold smile. His taunting power was maxed out!
"I'll definitely make you regret this!"
Olga Marie clenched her fists, and a frightening aura radiated from her body.
Olga Marie was not someone who lost her reason in anger. On the contrary, the more critical the situation became, the more capable she was of thinking of a solution. This was also why she would later be able to support Chaldea after her father's death.
Since she now understood that single-target attacks could not touch Higashino Kanade at all, Olga Marie decided to go big. She would turn the entire arena upside down.
Olga Marie began chanting. First, she reinforced the defensive barrier of her family's magecraft. Only after the zodiac pattern beneath her feet expanded by a full circle did she feel at ease. Then, she began chanting a large-scale spell.
"Stars; Cosmos; Gods; Animus."
Several circular magic formations emerged around her body, and a vast star map covered the sky above the entire arena.
"Quick! Activate the defensive spells!"
The referee in the arena was startled by such a massive display. He hurriedly leaped into the stands and joined several instructors in erecting a circular screen of light to protect the audience.
"My, that girl from the Animusphere Family is really going overboard. Is she trying to flatten this place?"
Lord Einolai exclaimed from the VIP seats, yet he showed no intention of stopping Olga Marie. Instead, he watched Higashino Kanade with great interest, wanting to see how he would resolve this crisis.
"Master! This is too reckless! Can junior disciple make it through this?"
Grea anxiously shook Waver's arm. Waver gritted his teeth and said grimly, "If Uchiha Kanade can't interrupt Olga Marie's chant in time, he'll probably have to transform into his Phantasmal Species form to withstand it."
"But didn't you tell junior disciple not to use the ninjutsu or transformations he mentioned at the Clock Tower?"
