Background / History

Waver participated in the Fourth Holy Grail War as the Master of Rider, Iskandar, the King of Conquerors. He regards Iskandar's defeat by Gilgamesh as his own failure and remains determined to prove he was worthy to follow his king. 18 55

After the war, Waver returned to the Clock Tower, bought his former director's classroom, became a teacher, and inherited the title of Lord El-Melloi II. He acknowledges that he holds the title on another's behalf and considers himself immature for the position. 16 38

The El-Melloi family's Mage Crest was left 98% damaged after the previous Lord El-Melloi was struck by Emiya Kiritsugu's Origin Bullet. Waver therefore joined the contest for Gryphon's Restorer inheritance, hoping to repair the Crest and prevent the family's further decline. 16

He later formed an alliance with Uchiha Kanade, accepting information on the Fourth and Fifth Holy Grail Wars in exchange for Magecraft instruction, cooperation, and a recommendation for Kanade to study at the Clock Tower. 18

Personality

Waver is humble under provocation, readily admitting his own shortcomings even as other Magi disparage his standing as a Lord. He is deeply insecure about his limited Magecraft talent and is jealous of gifted younger Magi, though he does not resent them. 16 18

His strongest traits are intellectual curiosity and persistence. He eagerly investigates unfamiliar phenomena, including Kanade's chakra-based abilities, and is willing to take risks for restricted knowledge or another chance to fight beside Iskandar. 25 27 34

Despite his complaints about Kanade's schemes, Waver gradually comes to regard him as a friend. He also shows genuine concern for his students and companions, particularly Grea. 18 47

Waver is a capable Magus in theory but considers his practical Magecraft second-rate. His rank is stated to be the Festival Seat, and his limited number of Mage Crests leaves him less affected than other Magi by attacks that target Crests directly. 17 26 46

Gryphon's Inheritance

Waver arrives at Adra Castle seeking Gryphon's Restorer inheritance for the El-Melloi family's damaged Mage Crest. After Kanade approaches him with knowledge of the Holy Grail Wars, Waver accepts an alliance and helps investigate the murders surrounding the inheritance contest. 16 18 22

He ultimately reveals Granite Ashborn's identity and orchestrates the confrontation that exposes Orlock's role in Gryphon's death. 24

Clock Tower and Forbidden Library

Kanade becomes Waver's student, while Waver lectures at the Clock Tower and investigates Kanade's unusual abilities. Waver also assists Kanade's infiltration of the Forbidden Library, using his authorized access to place a mundane bookmark that bypasses the library's defenses. 30 40 46 47

Mystic Eyes Collection Train

Waver boards the Mystic Eyes Collection Train with Grea and Caules to recover Iskandar's stolen Holy Relic. He accepts Kanade's assistance despite being wary of his recklessness. 47

During the train incident, Waver confronts Hephaestion, struggles with the sight of Iskandar's chariot in her possession, and later helps transfer Hartless's Command Seal to Kanade. 54 55 66

Fifth Holy Grail War

Following Kanade's departure, Waver earns Clock Tower authorization to enter the Fifth Holy Grail War. He summons Iskandar using the recovered Holy Relic, forms an alliance with Emiya Shirou and Tohsaka Rin, and ultimately wins the war. 68
