Background / History

Selina was born into a troubled family. Her mother was eccentric, preferred the company of cats, and died by suicide while Selina was young; her alcoholic father later died of alcoholism. Selina subsequently lived on the streets before being taken in by the thief Mama Luck, who forced children to steal and kept their gains. Selina eventually escaped, but retained both her thieving habit and her attachment to beautiful jewelry, which she associated with the opposite of her bleak childhood. 116

As Catwoman, she became one of Gotham's most capable jewel thieves. During an attempted burglary at a manor formerly owned by jeweler Herbert Simon, she ignored deeds and money to target the jewels in his safe. Ron, the manor's new owner, caught her inside and easily stopped every attempt she made to escape or attack him. 115 116

Ron coerced Selina into remaining at the manor by calling her his “pet,” preventing her from leaving and later placing a lightning-etched collar around her neck. He ordered her to investigate Clark Kent, Hal Jordan, and Diana Prince; she complied while continuing to seek a way to escape or remove the collar. 116 117
