Background / History
Shinobu is Kanae Kocho’s younger sister and lives at the Butterfly Mansion. When Tsugikuni Kuuga joins the household, she repeatedly teases him out of jealousy over Kanae treating him as a younger brother, though the two gradually become close. 5
Unlike Kanae, Shinobu deeply hates man-eating demons because demons killed her parents. Her hatred drives her resolve to kill demons even when facing opponents far stronger than herself. 12 49
She studies Tai Chi under Kuuga after learning that its use of softness and redirected force could compensate for her lack of physical strength. Tai Chi subsequently improves her flexibility and speed in battle. 6 49
Following repeated life-threatening battles, Shinobu confesses her feelings to Kuuga and begins a relationship with him. They are later referred to as husband and wife, and Shinobu becomes pregnant. 60 101 171 174
Appearance
Shinobu has black hair, purple eyes, and purple-tipped bangs arranged in a bouffant hairstyle. She wears a butterfly hair accessory in mint green with deep-purple edges. 5
- Wears a Demon Slayer Corps uniform and butterfly-patterned haori on missions. 8
- Uses a long, slender Nichirin Blade with a hooked tip, a four-leaf-shaped guard, mint-green tsuka, and white sheath. 11
- Her blade bears the engravings “Evil Demon” and “Exterminate.” 11
Personality
Shinobu is mischievous, competitive, and assertive. She frequently trades playful insults and physical blows with Kuuga, but is quick to check on him when she thinks she has hurt him. 5 7
She is intensely protective of Kanae and Kuuga. Her concern often emerges as anger, jealousy, or possessiveness, including dragging Kuuga home by the ear after finding him in the Flower District. 25 26 129
In combat, Shinobu is resolute and self-sacrificing. She refuses to abandon companions, shields Kanae from Douma’s attack, and continues fighting despite severe injuries. 49 100
Abilities & Skills
Insect Breathing
Shinobu uses Insect Breathing, emphasizing speed, evasive movement, repeated thrusts, and poison delivery rather than decapitation.
- Used Butterfly Dance – Trickery to stab Douma repeatedly and inject poison. 49
- Her rapid attacks delivered more than twenty additional stabs against Douma after Tai Chi enhanced her mobility. 49
- She used Insect Breathing poison to temporarily suppress Douma. 100
- Her style depends on piercing the target; opponents with defenses that her blade cannot penetrate can resist her poison. 12
Poison and Medicine
As a physician and poison developer, Shinobu develops demon-killing toxins and medical countermeasures.
- Developed poisons using Kuuga’s regenerative blood as research material. 5 6
- Defeated the Soundwave Demon with poison. 12
- Carried an antidote during the battle against Daki and Gyutaro, administering her dose to the more severely affected Obanai. 140
- Her poison was ineffective against Tetsu Gya due to his Iron Hardening Blood Demon Art and impenetrable body. 12
Tai Chi
Tai Chi gives Shinobu a method to address her physical weakness through redirected force, balance, and flexibility.
- Initially struggled with the movements but committed herself to mastering them after learning Kuuga had practiced for six years. 7
- Its training increased her flexibility and speed enough to evade Douma’s ice-based attacks. 49
- Demonstrates considerable close-range striking ability despite her smaller physical strength. 5 44
Mark
Shinobu possesses a Mark that can be pushed to its limit during battle.
- Her Mark reached its limit while trapped in Douma’s freezing ice domain. 101
- The increased power comes with heavy physical exhaustion after use. 155
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Nichirin Blade — Edgeless, lightweight thrusting sword designed for speed and poison injection. 11

Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Butterfly Mansion Period
Shinobu meets Kuuga six months after his arrival at the Butterfly Mansion. Their initial bickering grows into a closer bond as she learns Tai Chi and accompanies him on his first mission. 5 6 9
Man-eating Inn
Concerned by Kuuga’s exhaustion, Shinobu investigates the Man-eating Inn alone. She kills the Soundwave Demon with poison but is severely injured by Tetsu Gya, whose hardened body negates her usual method of attack. 11 12
Battle with Douma
Shinobu rushes to Kanae’s aid against Upper Rank Two Douma. She uses her speed, poison, and Tai Chi-trained flexibility to challenge him, then takes an attack meant for Kanae. Kuuga arrives in time to save her. 47 49
Douma later traps Shinobu and Tengen within an ice coffin. Shinobu refuses to abandon Tengen despite Douma offering to spare him in exchange for consuming her; Kuuga and Tengen eventually break in, and Kuuga kills Douma. 100 101
Relationship with Kuuga
After Kuuga’s recovery, Shinobu directly asks whether his earlier declaration that she was “his woman” still stands. She confesses first, initiating their relationship. 60 61
Her anxiety over Kuuga’s repeated near-death experiences persists throughout later missions, particularly when he encounters Upper Rank demons. 127 129
Entertainment District and Swordsmith Village Battles
Shinobu infiltrates the Flower District in men’s clothing to provide logistical and medical support. She helps investigate Daki’s location and later uses poison to paralyze Daki, opening an opportunity for Kuuga’s decisive strike. 131 133 140
After becoming overdrawn during the battle against Zohakuten, Kuuga knocks Shinobu unconscious and orders her retreat so she will not remain in danger. 155
