Background / History

Tanjiro was a charcoal seller living with his family and younger sister Nezuko. After Muzan slaughtered the Kamado family and turned Nezuko into a demon, Tanjiro returned home to find Kuuga waiting beside the bodies. Overwhelmed by grief and guilt, he nonetheless helped bury his family and resolved to save Nezuko. 62

Kuuga explained demons, Muzan, and the Demon Slayer Corps to Tanjiro. When Giyu Tomioka arrived intending to kill Nezuko, Tanjiro defended her and trusted that she would not harm humans; Nezuko ultimately protected Tanjiro from Giyu, proving that she retained her humanity. 63 64

Kuuga brought Tanjiro to Sakonji Urokodaki at Mount Sagiri and recommended him as a disciple. Tanjiro completed Urokodaki’s trial despite its traps, beginning his path as a Demon Slayer while Kuuga cared for Nezuko. 65

Personality

Tanjiro is compassionate even toward enemies. He recognizes that demons must be killed to prevent further victims, yet he still grieves for their former humanity and offers them acknowledgement in death. 65 92

He is earnest, polite, and strongly protective of others. He repeatedly places himself between danger and civilians, comrades, or Nezuko, and his determination intensifies when those close to him are threatened. 91 118 134 136

Tanjiro is also resilient and self-improving. He continues training despite injury, celebrates incremental progress against Yoriichi Zero Form, and seeks strength without abandoning his kindness. 147 148
