Background / History

Kuuga is a transmigrator and reincarnated Demon Slayer who retains knowledge of a future tragedy-ridden era. At fourteen, his village offers him to the “Mountain God,” an Earth Demon. Though armed only with a broken ancestral sword, he survives through Tai Chi, Sun-Breathing, an innate healing ability, and deception—famously exploiting demons’ fear of Muzan’s name. 1 2 3

After Kanae and Shinobu Kocho take him in at the Butterfly Mansion, Kuuga trains to protect the family he has gained. He enters Final Selection, saves Sabito from the Hand Demon, and joins Sabito and Giyu Tomioka in clearing Mount Fujikasane in three days, resulting in an unprecedented survival rate. 8 20 21

His first solo mission ends with the defeat of Lower Rank Six Kamuna. Soon after, he kills Lower Rank Four Zero Yu Zi, becoming a Hashira after defeating two Lower Ranks in one day. 35 37 39 41 42

Kuuga later survives a battle with Kokushibo through the intervention of Sanemi, Giyu, and Kyojuro. After recovering for three months, his relationship with Shinobu becomes known throughout the Corps. 57 58 61

During the decisive conflict, he fights Upper Ranks including Douma and Akaza, protects younger Demon Slayers during the Great Tengu incident, and coordinates against Zohakuten. In Infinity Castle, he and Yushiro pursue Nakime; Kuuga then confronts the heavily aged Muzan to delay his recovery and create an opening for the Corps. 81 99 123 155 179 185 186

Following the end of the demon conflict, Kuuga becomes the owner of the Tsugikuni Medical Clinic and studies medicine alongside the Butterfly Mansion’s healers. 191

Appearance

Kuuga carries an ancestral sword and wears Hanafuda Earrings, which he jokingly calls the “Head Pillar’s signature accessory.” 1

  • Deep-red hair worn in a ponytail. 193
  • Wears a haori bearing blue butterfly and golden sun motifs, made by Kanae Kocho and Aoi Kanzaki and embroidered by Shinobu. 16
  • Receives Sakonji Urokodaki’s warding fox mask as a sign of approval. 25
  • His Demon Slayer Mark manifests as expanding sun-like markings on his forehead. 57

Personality

Kuuga is openly playful, irreverent, and prone to taunting enemies even when outmatched. He frequently uses humor to defuse tension, whether mocking demons, teasing his allies, or making light of his own injuries. 1 20 57 81

Beneath this behavior, he is intensely protective and self-sacrificing. His training is motivated by a desire to protect his new family, and he repeatedly prioritizes civilians and comrades over his own recovery. 8 26 38 86 He also holds firm personal principles: he refuses to kneel to Oyakata-sama, while still treating him with respect and offering to suppress the Ubuyashiki curse. 27

Abilities & Skills

Sun-Breathing

Kuuga wields Sun-Breathing through a Tai Chi-informed sword style. He initially knows the thirteen forms from an inherited manual but must develop the physical ability to perform them. 2 3

  • Uses forms including Vortex Waltz, Azure Sky, Setting Sun Transformation, Mirage Sun Rainbow, and Brilliant Grace Light. 2 3 20
  • Links all twelve foundational forms into the Thirteenth Form, creating a continuous assault that broke Zero Yu Zi’s Mist Armor. 37
  • Develops a gentler Yin Style of Sun-Breathing to counter enemies whose bodies and attacks rely on softness. 33
  • Sun-Breathing wounds hinder demonic regeneration and inflict a lingering burning sensation. 2

Tai Chi

Kuuga practiced Tai Chi before arriving in this world and seeks to introduce it throughout the Demon Slayer Corps. 1 27

  • Uses Tai Chi Bagua footwork to evade attacks with unusual flexibility and redirect force. 20
  • His Tai Chi helps him comprehend Sun-Breathing as a dance-like discipline. 20
  • Defeats Gyomei Himejima in a Tai Chi match. 42
  • Teaches Tai Chi to the Hashira to strengthen the Corps’ overall combat capability. 41

Tai Chi Sense

A precognitive combat sense used alongside his swordsmanship. 35

  • Allows Kuuga to anticipate attacks and exploit openings.
  • Helps him evade Kokushibo’s lethal strikes. 57
  • Does not guarantee safety against overwhelmingly fast or complex attacks. 57 79

Scarlet Blade

By gripping his sword with extreme force, Kuuga turns his Nichirin Blade red-hot. 38

  • Burns through demon-made mist and inflicts severe, difficult-to-heal wounds. 38
  • Temporarily suppresses demonic regeneration. 41
  • Requires immense physical exertion; veins visibly rise across his body while forming it. 38

Demon Slayer Mark

Kuuga bears a legendary Mark and can activate it by raising his heart rate and body temperature. 1 57

  • Greatly improves his speed and combat power. 57 79
  • Lets him push his Sun-Breathing and Scarlet Blade to greater levels. 57
  • Is described as life-burning and associated with dying before age twenty-five. 57

Tai Chi Four Symbols

A higher-level extension of Kuuga’s Tai Chi and Sun-Breathing combat style. 81

  • Azure Dragon Roar — A massive fire-dragon attack and Kuuga’s strongest offensive technique; he can use it at most three times per day due to the stamina cost. 81 99
  • White Tiger Leap — Greatly increases his jumping ability, allowing him to reach airborne enemies. 81
  • Black Tortoise Shield — A flame-wreathed defensive barrier that can block attacks, though it can shatter under sustained force. 84 96

Healing and Yin–Yang Regulation

Kuuga possesses an innate green-light healing ability that restored his broken ribs early in his journey. 2

  • Can regulate the black-and-white aspects of his Mark by balancing yin and yang. 86
  • Attempts to use this regulation to help injured comrades recover. 86
  • His healing does not prevent him from suffering exhaustion, broken bones, or severe combat injuries. 58 81 86

Clear and Transparent State

Kuuga reaches the Clear and Transparent State during the Infinity Castle operation. 185

  • Enhances Dual Wielding Style and lets him detect Nakime’s location through more than ten walls.
  • Provides heightened spatial awareness useful against Infinity Castle’s shifting terrain. 185

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Nichirin Blade — His principal weapon; one blade manifests a black, white, and red koi-fish pattern. 30
  • Broken ancestral sword — A family heirloom used during his first battle with the Earth Demon. 1 2
