Background / History
Sanemi was already the Wind Hashira when he began repeatedly challenging Tsugikuni Kuuga to spar. He had pestered Kuuga for roughly half a year because he recognized the reserve slayer’s hidden strength, though Kuuga usually avoided the fights. Their constant arguments gradually became a friendship neither was especially willing to admit. 9 16
He reacts competitively to Kuuga’s rapid rise, but his concern is genuine: after Kuuga survives encounters with two Lower Ranks, Sanemi worries for him beneath his complaints. He later eagerly learns the Scarlet Blade from Kuuga and tests it until his hand is burned. 39 41
Sanemi’s relationship with his younger brother Genya is initially strained by guilt, resentment, and his desire to keep Genya out of the dangerous Demon Slayer Corps. Kuuga confronts him over these feelings and arranges the brothers’ reunion; Genya apologizes, and Sanemi ultimately accepts him back with an embrace. 107 109 110
Appearance
Sanemi is a heavily scarred, powerfully built swordsman with an intimidating presence. His chest is usually exposed beneath his Corps uniform. 9
- White, hedgehog-like hair.
- Three long scars across his face.
- Extensive scars covering his body.
- Pronounced musculature.
- Green windmill-like markings on his right cheek when his Demon Slayer Mark manifests. 84
Personality
Sanemi is blunt, volatile, and intensely competitive. He readily insults or challenges allies, especially Kuuga, but his aggression often conceals concern; he worries about comrades’ safety and refuses to accept their deaths quietly. 16 39 49
He is deeply protective of his family, even when he expresses that protection through harshness. His treatment of Genya and his brutal instruction of younger slayers stem from his belief that weakness in demon hunting can be fatal. 107 110
Around Kanae, Sanemi becomes conspicuously awkward and shy. He protects her when they fall together, keeps the handkerchief she uses to bandage him, and later openly lives with her as her husband. 44 161 193
Abilities & Skills
Wind Breathing
Sanemi wields Wind Breathing with aggressive, high-speed slashes and large-scale cutting attacks.
- Uses Second Form: Claws, Third Form: Clear Gale Forest, Seventh Form: Gale, Tengu Wind, Eighth Form: First Gust, and Ninth Form: Idaten Typhoon during his spar with Kuuga. 42

- His strongest attacks are powerful enough to combine with other Hashira’s techniques against Kokushibo. 187
Scarlet Blade

Tai Chi Conditioning
Sanemi adopts Kuuga’s Tai Chi after initially dismissing it as a strange dance.
- Its conditioning strengthens his body and complements his swordsmanship. 41 42

- Gains rapid regeneration, blood-red eyes, and protruding fangs. 109
- Lets him fight through otherwise fatal injuries and defeat the Cleaver Demon through a trade-off attack. 109
