Background / History
Dumbledore suffered the loss of nearly his entire family after a mistake in his youth, leaving Godric's Hollow while estranged from his brother Aberforth. Headmaster Phineas Black invited him to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts, though Dumbledore requested time before accepting. During this period, Nicolas Flamel enlisted him to investigate a dangerous magical creature in the Krkonoše Mountains. Flamel regarded him as Hogwarts' best graduate in a century, while Dumbledore treated the elder alchemist with deep respect. 138
He formed a close friendship with Nicolas Flamel, whom he described as both a mentor and his dearest friend. Together, they captured a Ukrainian Ironbelly, identified twelve uses of dragon's blood, and published a significant paper. 70
In his youth, Dumbledore was manipulated and seduced by Gellert Grindelwald, who recognized his talent and sought to make him an ally. Dumbledore later attributed his break with Grindelwald to Ariana's death and continued to carry guilt over the consequences of their relationship. Grindelwald eventually told him of Prophet Animagi, making Dumbledore the only known ordinary wizard aware of their existence. 310 311
Dumbledore became Hogwarts Headmaster in 1943 after defeating Grindelwald. He refused to pursue retaliation against the Malfoy family despite its role in Percival Dumbledore's imprisonment, instead rejecting Abraxas Malfoy's overtures; this helped drive the Malfoys toward Voldemort. 452 505
As Headmaster, he identified Tom Riddle's abnormal nature during Riddle's student years and later refused his application for the Defence Against the Dark Arts post. Riddle's rejection was followed by the long-running curse on the position. 518 534
