Background / History
Sirius was born into the ancient Black family but attended Hogwarts as a Gryffindor. His relatives were largely Death Eaters or Voldemort sympathizers, while Sirius rejected their beliefs and became close friends with James Potter, Lily Evans, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew. At sixteen, he and his friends independently mastered Animagus transformation. 359 462
During the First Wizarding War, Sirius proposed a last-minute change to the Potters’ protection plan: instead of himself, Peter Pettigrew would become their Secret-Keeper. He believed Voldemort would target him as the obvious choice and overlook Peter. Peter betrayed the Potters, but Sirius blamed himself for persuading James and Lily to trust him. 232 237
After the Potters’ deaths, Sirius was accused of murdering Peter and betraying James and Lily. Barty Crouch sent him directly to Azkaban without a trial. Sirius did not defend himself, believing he bore moral responsibility for the Potters’ deaths; he remained imprisoned for twelve years. 237 359
He escaped Azkaban by using his unregistered Animagus form and returned to Hogwarts’ vicinity to find and kill Peter, who had survived as Ron Weasley’s rat, Scabbers. Amosta Breen captured Sirius, extracted the truth from his memories, and forced him to involve Remus and Dumbledore rather than pursue revenge alone. 237 238 945
Peter’s exposure led to Sirius’s public trial. The Wizengamot cleared him of responsibility for the Potters’ deaths; his illegal Animagus transformation resulted only in a fine. 359 360
Appearance
Azkaban left Sirius emaciated and ragged, but he gradually regained a more composed and aristocratic appearance after his exoneration. 227 294
- In his early adulthood, he had neat dark hair, sharp features, and wore elegant robes. 232
- After his escape, he was skeletal, with tangled hair to his elbows, sunken eyes, protruding ribs, and filthy prison clothes. 227 233
- Once recovered, he wore well-fitted, expensive robes; his defining features included sharp grey eyes and thin cheeks. 294
- As a Hogwarts professor, he was considered handsome, though his expression often carried a lingering melancholy. 367
- His Animagus form is a large black dog. 180 233
Personality
Sirius is fiercely loyal, impulsive, and deeply protective of those he considers family. His guilt over James and Lily’s deaths drives much of his early behavior: he initially refuses help because he believes killing Peter himself is the only way to atone. 237 254
His temper is especially apparent around Severus Snape, Draco Malfoy, and the Black family’s blood-purity ideology. He is quick to confront insults or perceived injustice, sometimes escalating situations through threats or reckless force. 245 368 418
Despite this volatility, Sirius becomes more reflective after regaining his freedom. He acknowledges Amosta’s help, worries about Remus’s difficult life, empathizes with Hermione’s experience of persecution, and encourages Harry to consider Ron’s feelings rather than repeat the Marauders’ failure to notice Peter’s isolation. 263 273 588 590
