Background / History
Nalan Yanran was the Yun Lan Sect's Young Sect Mistress and Yun Yun's disciple. Believing Xiao Yan's low cultivation would obstruct her future, she arrived at the Xiao Family with Ge Ye to annul their engagement. The confrontation culminated in the Three-Year Agreement: a future duel between herself and Xiao Yan. Yao Wan intervened on Xiao Yan's behalf, humiliating the Yun Lan Sect party and leaving Nalan frightened by the difference in their strength 33.
Over the following year, Yanran trained to exhaustion in preparation for the agreement. Although initially reluctant to return to the Imperial Capital, she did so when her grandfather Nalan Jie became gravely ill from Brand Poison. Her concern for him led her to set aside her hostility toward Yao Wan, the Medicine Fairy treating him 88 90.
Yao Wan confronted Yanran over the humiliation inflicted on Xiao Yan and warned that Xiao Yan, already a Nine Star Dou Zhe, would likely defeat her. Yanran acknowledged that her past actions had been wrong, though she could not undo them. Yao Wan subsequently made her into a “whetstone” for Xiao Yan's growth while also providing cultivation guidance and resources 91 93.
After healing Yanran's meridians, Yao Wan altered and improved her cultivation method into the Earth-Rank Azure Cloud Wind Control Art. Yanran later trained with Yao Wan against imitations of Xiao Yan's combat style, specifically preparing for the Mystic Heavy Ruler and his hidden speed once he discarded it 96 190.
Appearance
Yanran is a graceful young woman with a cool, ethereal bearing that conceals a sharp, sword-like presence.
- Often wears a moon-white or moon-colored robe 178 210.
- Has long dark hair, usually tied in a high ponytail; she releases it during the Three-Year Agreement's final stages 178 214.
- Her clear eyes can display a sharp glint likened to a drawn sword 210.
- Resembles Yao Wan by roughly seventy to eighty percent, though their temperaments differ substantially 182.
- Uses a veil and the identity Qing Ran when concealing herself 182 224.
Personality
Yanran was initially proud, sharp-tempered, and accustomed to relying on the standing of the Nalan Family and Yun Lan Sect. Her decision to annul her engagement publicly wounded Xiao Yan's dignity, an action she later recognized as wrong 33 91.
Her experiences with Yao Wan, Xiao Yan, and her grandfather's illness gradually temper her arrogance. She becomes more patient, polite toward people she once might have dismissed, and increasingly willing to accept guidance 90 176. She remains intensely competitive and strong-willed, however; even after growing close to Xiao Yan, she refuses to accept being left behind by his advancement 382.
Yanran is also stubbornly private about affection. She admits to Zi Yan that she likes Xiao Yan but initially refuses to confess because of the harm caused by her past actions and the likely disapproval of his family and companions 357 358.
Abilities & Skills
Sword Intent
Yanran is a sword cultivator whose attacks combine Wind-attribute Dou Qi and increasingly refined Sword Intent.
- Her speed far exceeds that of ordinary Wind-attribute cultivators of the same realm 211.
- Her Sword Intent is described as “Clear and Bright,” a level neither Yun Shan nor Yun Yun attained 316.
- At No Sword Mountain, the local concentration of Sword Intent allows her to unleash attacks beyond her normal capabilities 359.
- Her sword intent and Dou Qi later become intertwined strongly enough to sever a Dou Qi thread formed by a Three Star Dou Sheng 732.
Azure Cloud Wind Control Art
An Earth-Rank Low-Level cultivation method created by Yao Wan from an improved Azure Cloud Swordplay and named by Yanran herself 96.
- Increases her Dou Qi circulation speed by 30% after Yao Wan repairs her meridians 96.
- Replaces the former Azure Cloud Swordplay, which had reached its developmental limit 96.
- Removes redundant elements from the original method while strengthening cultivation speed and future potential 356.
- Provides the foundation for her later transformation after receiving Yun Potian's inheritance 364.
Flying Willow Body Technique
An advanced movement Dou Technique developed from the Yun Lan Sect's Flying Willow Body Technique.
- Blends Wind-attribute lightness with the unpredictability of swordplay 189.
- Enables swift, fierce lunges and thrusts during the Three-Year Agreement 211.
- Its refined form astonishes onlookers and raises concerns over the Yun Lan Sect's hidden strength 213.
Absolute Sword
A sword technique inspired in part by a stone-hammer technique Yanran studied mentally.
- Used to split clouds above Yun Lan Mountain 176.
- Reflects her focus on building a stronger technical foundation rather than relying solely on cultivation level 176.
Azure Cloud Sword
A cultivation legacy passed directly to Yanran by Yun Potian, the Yun Lan Sect's founding progenitor 361.
- Has no fixed conventional rank; its strength depends on the wielder's Sword Intent realm 361.
- Is inherited after Yanran proves herself capable of controlling the natural formation at No Sword Mountain 360 361.
- Leads to a transformation in which her prior Dou Qi and Sword Intent merge, sharply raising her cultivation 364.
Formation Control
Yanran inherits control of the natural great formation at No Sword Mountain.
- Her Sword Intent repels the Black Qi emitted by the sealed remnant Soul 360.
- Endures the formation's Soul-level backlash with Xiao Yan sharing its burden through Divine Sense bridging 360.
- Later absorbs No Sword Mountain's crystal energy and inherited Sword Intent, leaving behind her own Sword Intent Restriction before departing 585.
Glass Body Sculpting Art
A body-refinement art taught to Yanran by Yao Wan.
- Intended to improve her physical foundation alongside her rapid gains from Yun Potian's legacy 382.
- Supports her determination to keep pace with Xiao Yan's advancement 382.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Annulment and the Three-Year Agreement
Yanran publicly seeks to annul her engagement to Xiao Yan, setting the central rivalry in motion. Her initial confidence is shaken by Yao Wan's intervention, but she commits herself to three years of training 33.
At Yun Lan Mountain, Yanran faces Xiao Yan in the Three-Year Agreement. She demonstrates overwhelming speed, Sword Intent, Flying Willow-derived movement, Dou Qi Armor, and a Sword Qi Storm. Xiao Yan ultimately wins; both are nearly killed by the final collision, and Yao Wan saves them 210 216.
Yao Wan's Guidance
Faced with Xiao Yan's rapid advancement, Yanran agrees to accept Yao Wan's cultivation assistance. Her meridians are healed, her technique is remade into the Azure Cloud Wind Control Art, and she receives practical combat training tailored to Xiao Yan's style 92 96 190.
Secret-Realm Trial and Reconciliation
Disguised as Qing Ran, Yanran encounters Xiao Yan during Yao Wan's arranged trial. Though she recognizes him, she conceals her identity and allows him priority over treasures from his ancestral relic. Their hostile dynamic gradually changes into one marked by fairness, cooperation, and mutual curiosity 182 183.
Yanran later recognizes Xiao Yan's alias, Yan Xiao, and permits him to treat Nalan Jie's Brand Poison despite their history. Her sincere gratitude and restraint further demonstrate her changed character 196 197.
Defense of the Xiao Family
After completing a Life and Death Gate seclusion and reaching Dou Huang, Yanran joins the defense of the Imperial Capital against Soul Clan forces. She refuses to surrender Xiao Zhan and the Xiao Family, sustaining severe injuries while protecting them until Xiao Yan arrives 316 318 320.
No Sword Mountain Inheritance
Yanran locates No Sword Mountain using her Azure Cloud Swordplay. There, she inherits a natural formation, receives Yun Potian's Azure Cloud Sword legacy, and undergoes a major cultivation transformation as her Dou Qi and Sword Intent merge 356 360 365.
She later completes her seclusion, absorbs the mountain's crystal energy and Sword Intent, inherits No Sword Mountain, and leaves behind a restriction to protect the site 585.
Relationship with Xiao Yan
Yanran first admits privately that she likes Xiao Yan but feels unable to confess due to the consequences of her earlier actions 357. Following her cultivation transformation, she openly admits her feelings; Xiao Yan reciprocates, beginning their romantic relationship 364 365.
Their relationship remains complicated by Xiao Yan's other companions. Yanran experiences jealousy but increasingly faces these emotions directly rather than denying them 596 602.
Later Conflicts
Yanran continues pursuing strength, choosing to cultivate at the Nine Nether Yellow Springs and later reaching peak Dou Zun 692 605. By the later stages of the story, she reaches mid-stage Dou Sheng and fights alongside the Endless Fire Territory's defenders, retreating to heal only so she can return to battle 875 1186.
