Background / History

Ulu was an orphan who endured sexual abuse in exchange for food. While he was away, his mother died; he later becomes determined to uncover the truth behind her death. These experiences leave him convinced that he is irredeemably corrupt, despite wanting to become a good person. 30

As a Father of the Rhine God Sect, Ulu exploited a hungry boy’s desperation by offering food and shelter in exchange for faith and obedience. He then discovered Visas’s severed finger in his wardrobe, cut off his own middle finger, and attached the relic to gain its power. Visas—later identified as Bai Wei—began speaking in his mind. 1

Ulu killed Father Luigi and subsequently assassinated Father Lu Ji, the man connected to his childhood trauma. After breaking Lu Ji’s magical chains with Bai Wei’s power, Ulu overcame his fear and killed him. He attempted to conceal the crime by completing and sending Lu Ji’s letter to Bishop Keli. 6 7

Kaisai’s arrival and investigation forced Ulu into a dangerous game of deception. Kaisai manipulated him into helping pursue the supposed thief of Visas’s finger, intending to use Ulu as a scapegoat. 9 24

After Bai Wei revealed that the finger was draining his life and that Ulu’s fate had been sealed by acquiring it, Ulu accepted a new bargain: he would travel to Somu City in exchange for information about his mother’s death. 39 41

Ulu returned to his ruined home village after twenty years. When Kaisai’s knights tortured a boy for information about him, Ulu initially chose escape, then emerged to attack the knights after Bai Wei drove him into an emotional breakdown. 33

He later returned to confront Kaisai, gave money to a pair of orphans, and told them to leave rather than become priests or enter churches. During their battle, Ulu and Bai Wei’s combined tactics wounded Kaisai and ultimately led to the Knight Captain’s death. 34 36 38

In Somu City, Ulu pursued clues concerning his mother’s death and came to suspect High Priest Heli. Bai Wei led him near the West Cathedral, where Ulu saw Heli but left before being recognized. 46 48

Ulu eventually learned that the West Cathedral Bishops had orchestrated his fate. Rather than accept Bai Wei’s proposed trade or return home, he chose to save Kaiya. 60

He later challenged Bishop Keli without Bai Wei’s assistance, seeking to prove himself. Despite severe injuries, he used Termination repeatedly, blinded Keli with detonated white mist, and took Keli’s left eye before Bai Wei assumed control of his body. 62 63

Appearance

Ulu is a priest whose appearance becomes increasingly disheveled as he flees the Rhine God Sect and suffers the effects of Visas’s power.

  • Wore a bloodstained priest’s robe after killing Father Luigi. 8
  • Used a black robe while traveling to Somu City. 41
  • Replaced his severed middle finger with Visas’s finger. 1
  • Was described as a wild and angry figure after defecting from the church. 34
  • Coughs blood and later discovers that his blood has turned black as his condition deteriorates. 20 38

Personality

Ulu is deeply fearful of death, authority, and the loss of control over his own body. In the early stages of his bond with Bai Wei, he is submissive and desperate for protection, readily relying on the being he knows is manipulating him. 8 14

His ambition, resentment, and greed make him vulnerable to manipulation. Bai Wei repeatedly exploits Ulu’s hatred of Luigi, Lu Ji, and Kaisai, as well as his desire for recognition and power. 3 4 24

Despite his cruelty and self-preservation, Ulu is capable of empathy. He gives food to a hungry boy, protects children from the church’s influence, and ultimately risks himself to save Kaiya. His treatment of the boy is also tied to his need to prove that he can help another person become a “flower,” rather than a “bug” like himself. 8 22 34 40 60

He gradually becomes more assertive toward Bai Wei, demanding proof rather than promises about his mother’s death and eventually refusing Bai Wei’s help in his fight against Keli. 41 62

Termination

Ulu can use Termination in desperate combat, though repeated use significantly weakens him. 63

  • Used Termination three times while severely injured against Keli. 63
  • Combined it with a close-range white-mist detonation to blind Keli and take his left eye. 63
  • Its repeated use leaves him weakened. 63

Visas’s Finger

Ulu attached Visas’s severed finger in place of his own middle finger, establishing Bai Wei’s presence in his mind and body. 1

  • Grants access to power capable of breaking magical chains. 6
