First Appearance Chapter 416

History

During the Third Great Ninja War, the Third Raikage initially declined to divert Kumogakure's forces to investigate Sōsuke's Ninshu inheritance, despite recognizing his victory over Hanzō as a sign of considerable strength 416. He later backed his assistant Tuli Yi's proposal to attack Konoha after its losses in successive wars, breaking a tie among Kumogakure's senior leadership 589.

He expected his son, A, and Killer B to become an exceptionally strong A-B Combo. Though B had not fully mastered the Eight-Tails' power, the Raikage sent him to the battlefield with A, believing combat experience would hasten his growth 463 623. After both lost to younger Konoha ninja in the Martial Arts Tournament, he reconsidered his plan to hand the Raikage position to A in two years 738.

The Third Raikage joined the Kage's attempt to kill Hanyu Mu Yue and personally attacked him, but the effort failed 652 653 655. He subsequently took part in a peace agreement among the Five Great Ninja Villages 657.

Appearance

The Third Raikage is a tall, heavily muscled man with pale yellow hair 653 744.

  • His expression is described as stern; he appears with his arms folded during a Kage meeting 589 657.
  • His Lightning Release Chakra Mode envelops his body in blue lightning 744.

Abilities & Skills

Lightning Release Chakra Mode

The Third Raikage's lightning armor provides formidable speed, strength, and defense. Its durability is known as the Strongest Shield, while his endurance makes him particularly effective in prolonged combat 711 726.

  • Ordinary Ninjutsu has little effect on him; at full power, he shattered Ōnoki's wide-area Earth Release attacks by force 726 748.
  • He uses his speed and lightning-enhanced reactions to evade dangerous techniques, including Obito's Kamui 654.
  • His Lightning Oppression Horizontal is a lightning-wreathed hand chop used both in direct combat and surprise attacks 744 750.

Hell Stab

Hell Stab concentrates lightning into the fingers of one hand. It is known as the Strongest Spear; reducing the number of extended fingers increases its power, with One-Finger Nukite as its strongest form 655.

  • He used Four-Finger Nukite to disperse Might Guy's Day Tiger 744.
  • One-Finger Nukite overcame Guy's Golden Horizon Line in their tournament match 744 745.
  • Mu Yue's Sage Art: Lightning Horizon defeated One-Finger Nukite and severed the Raikage's index finger 752.

Relationships

  • A — His son and intended successor. The Third Raikage planned to pass him the position, then postponed doing so after A's tournament loss 211 738.
  • Killer B — A's partner in the new A-B Combo. The Raikage trusted B's potential but instructed A to protect him on the battlefield 463 623.
  • Tuli Yi — His trusted assistant and right-hand man, whose argument persuaded him to attack Konoha 589.
  • Might Guy — Tournament opponent. The Raikage won their close contest but was injured by Guy's final strike 744 745.
  • Mu Yue — The target of an attempted Kage-led assassination and, later, the opponent who defeated him and ordered his removal from office 652 752 754.

Story Role / Major Arcs

  • Martial Arts Tournament — Defeated Guy and Ōnoki before facing Hiruzen Sarutobi in the final 745 748 749.
  • Betrayal and defeat — After the final, he launched a surprise attack on Hiruzen as the other Kage attacked Mu Yue. Mu Yue revealed that he was both the Fourth Hokage and Ninshu's master, then defeated the Raikage in the ensuing battle 750 752.
  • Aftermath — Mu Yue ordered the defeated Kage to have successors elected and prepare for imprisonment rather than treating their entry into an alliance as absolution 754.
