Background

Tony Stark was abducted by the Freedom Fighters in the Gobi Mountains and ordered to manufacture a Jericho missile. Instead, he and fellow captive Yinsen secretly constructed an escape armor. Stark escaped in the Mark I after Yinsen sacrificed himself to create an opening, an event that permanently reshaped Stark’s view of his weapons and their victims. 571 573 600

After reaching safety, Stark gave the military the base’s location and returned to New York. He shut down Stark Industries’ weapons-manufacturing division after learning that weapons he designed had armed terrorists and nearly caused his own death. He then built a miniature reactor and refined armor, becoming known publicly as Iron Man while destroying terrorist-held Stark weapons and protecting civilians. 576 600

Stark uncovered Obadiah Stane’s role in weapons trafficking and had him arrested. Stane later escaped using Iron Monger armor, making him one of Stark’s recurring adversaries. 600
