Parallel Counterparts

The story features two versions of Nagato:

  • Imperial Nagato — An Uzumaki shinobi from the unified Empire who joins Kakashi and Obito on the first cross-dimensional expedition. His Rinnegan is activated shortly before or during this mission. 1 2 43
  • Native-world Nagato — The emaciated Akatsuki leader operating from the Rain Village. He controls the Six Paths of Pain, including the body of his friend Yahiko. 76 106 186 192

Background and History

Imperial Nagato

Madara implanted the Rinnegan in Nagato’s body, but it remained unactivated while Nagato stood at the threshold of Super-Kage. Uchiha Senju selected him, Obito, and Kakashi for a voluntary Super S-class expedition through a newly completed cross-dimensional transfer array; Kakashi served as the trio’s leader. Before their departure, Senju supplied Nagato with a Six Paths Chakra serum to awaken the Rinnegan. 1

Upon reaching the parallel world’s Valley of the End, Nagato opposed bringing the Empire’s war and expansion into an innocent world. He was initially portrayed as gentle, peace-minded, and deeply affected by the human cost of war. 2

His encounters with the parallel world’s poverty, hostility toward shinobi, and treatment of civilians steadily changed his outlook. He could not understand why productive shinobi were feared and despised, and he became increasingly disturbed by a system in which commoners were left vulnerable to rogue ninja. 5 16 After witnessing its conditions, he began to see the Empire’s unification and the Emperor’s Holy War as a harsh but necessary route to prosperity and lasting peace. 34

Nagato repeatedly used his power to intervene directly. He resurrected victims through a modified Impure World Reincarnation technique by making the rogue ninja who killed them serve as vessels, and he constructed a massive bridge across the sea for the civilians of the Land of Waves. 17 42

After Danzo used Kotoamatsukami against him, Nagato emerged with an uncompromising conviction that Konoha could survive only through unification under the Empire’s ideology. Kakashi and Obito were alarmed by the intensity of his change. 63 64 70

During the campaign for Tailed Beasts, Nagato extracted the Nine-Tails from Naruto and sealed it within himself. He later captured the Eight-Tails from Killer B and the Two-Tails from Yugito Nii, using their chakra to support the Empire’s advance. 54 163 164 166

Nagato eventually confronted Six Paths Hashirama. He overwhelmed multiple Kage-level opponents and summoned his full arsenal, but Hashirama’s Thousand-Armed Kannon annihilated his summons and mech armors. Nagato attempted a modified Planetary Devastation before conceding that he could not wield the Rinnegan as freely as someone with a purer bloodline. 251 253 254

Native-world Nagato

The native Nagato leads Akatsuki from the Rain Village through the Six Paths of Pain. He uses Pain as both Akatsuki’s public face and a relay for transmitting signals across the Ninja World. 106

Pain is Nagato’s friend and clone, with Yahiko’s body being the one Nagato values most. The loss of Pain’s bodies, particularly Yahiko’s, devastates him and leaves him desperate to preserve Akatsuki’s ideals. 181 186 192

His Six Paths of Pain are defeated by Empire forces and powerful Uchiha opponents. Splitting his attention across several Paths, summoned Tailed Beasts, and multiple simultaneous battles leaves him overwhelmed and forces him to accelerate Akatsuki’s plans. 169 171 192

Madara later uses Black Zetsu to control Nagato and forces him to perform the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique, restoring Madara at the cost of Nagato’s life force. Yahiko brings the critically injured Nagato to Tsunade, who uses Self-Life Revival to treat him; Nagato later reunites with both Yahiko and Konan. 246 260 265

Personality

Imperial Nagato

Nagato begins as compassionate and idealistic. He fears conquest, values peace, and is troubled by the thought of innocent people being sacrificed for the Emperor’s ambitions. 2

He is analytical and sensitive to social conditions. The parallel world’s poor infrastructure, mistreatment of civilians, and use of shinobi as disposable tools force him to reconsider his former beliefs. 5 16 32

Over time, his desire to end suffering turns radical. He comes to view forced unification, conquest, and even deliberate destruction as acceptable means of making populations dependent on the Empire’s reconstruction and social order. 64 166

Native-world Nagato

The native Nagato is burdened by grief, particularly over Yahiko and the loss of the Six Paths of Pain. His attachment to Yahiko’s body remains central to his decisions even when Akatsuki’s plans collapse around him. 186 192

He is willing to cooperate with Obito and Orochimaru when faced with the Empire’s threat, but their alliance remains uneasy because their ideals and methods differ. 192 196

Abilities & Skills

Rinnegan and Six Paths Techniques

Nagato’s Rinnegan grants him access to the Six Paths’ powers, including gravitational manipulation, chakra absorption, soul-related techniques, summoning, and mechanical weaponry.

  • Uses Almighty Pull without hand seals to draw enemies toward him. 16
  • Uses Almighty Push to repel opponents, weapons, and large-scale attacks. 162 164
  • Can use Almighty Pull on himself to regain control of his movement after being knocked away. 251
  • The Rinnegan’s consumption remains a major burden because Nagato lacks an Uchiha body; Senju’s serum reduces the cost but does not remove the limitation. 1 63 254
  • Ninjutsu is highly ineffective against his Preta Path; senjutsu, taijutsu, and exceptional techniques are more effective counters. 252

Preta Path: Chakra Devour

Nagato can absorb chakra directly, including chakra from jinchūriki, ninjutsu, and large groups of targets.

  • Drained Root members before killing them during the battle with Danzo. 62
  • Absorbed Gyūki’s chakra through Adamantine Sealing Chains and endured the Eight-Tails’ attempt to overload him. 163
  • Absorbed Rasengan through a chakra-materialized arm during his battle with Minato. 252
  • Used drained chakra from the Nine-Tails and Hidden Sand shinobi to help power a cross-dimensional channel. 72

Adamantine Sealing Chains and Beast Extraction

As an Uzumaki, Nagato manifests powerful chains capable of restraining and extracting Tailed Beasts.

  • Extracted the Nine-Tails from Naruto and sealed it within himself using a Four Symbols Seal. 54
  • Bound Gyūki and Killer B, turning the chains into conduits for chakra absorption. 163
  • Extracted the Eight-Tails and Two-Tails from their jinchūriki with Outer Path extraction techniques. 164 166
  • Used the Chakra Transference Technique to transfer extracted Nine-Tails chakra into Naruto. 52

Six Paths of Pain

The native Nagato remotely operates corpses equipped with Rinnegan and Black Receivers.

  • Uses Pain to convene Akatsuki and communicate with members across the Ninja World. 106
  • Deploys individual Paths with specialized functions, including Human, Asura, Naraka, Preta, Animal, and Deva Paths. 169 171
  • The Asura Path can develop mechanical armor and deploy weapon systems such as Gatling guns and laser cannons. 61 169
  • The Naraka Path’s King of Hell can restore Nagato after apparent death through King of Hell’s Rinne Rebirth. 162
  • Operating numerous Paths, Tailed Beasts, and battles simultaneously severely divides Nagato’s attention. 171

Summoning Techniques

Nagato can summon both giant animals and mechanical entities through his Rinnegan.

  • Summons creatures including a rhinoceros, centipede, fission hound, chameleon, giant bird, and Yama King. 251 253
  • Uses Rinnegan-eyed centipede and chameleon summons to infiltrate a Root-sealed area and defeat its guards. 37
  • Can summon two massive mechanical puppets in addition to his animal summons. 251
  • Hashirama’s Thousand-Armed Kannon destroys Nagato’s six summons and two mech armors; the damage cannot be immediately undone. 253

Elemental and Medical Ninjutsu

Nagato is proficient with multiple conventional and specialized techniques beyond the Rinnegan.

  • Uses Fire Release and Wind Release during his pursuit of Danzo. 62
  • Performs Hell Path: Life Stitching Technique to restore Sasuke after he damages his body through reckless training. 56
  • Uses a modified Impure World Reincarnation technique to revive victims through the bodies of the rogue ninja who killed them. 17
  • Created a sea-spanning bridge through Earth Release: Sea World Bridge Weaving Technique, exhausting himself only after completing it. 42

Sage Mode and Planetary Devastation

Nagato can combine Sage Mode, Six Paths techniques, and large-scale sealing techniques.

  • Uses Sage Mode while subduing Gyūki and Killer B. 163
  • Relies on Planetary Devastation as a decisive answer to serious resistance. 65
  • His Six Paths: Modified Planetary Devastation can seal a target while drawing out their chakra and soul through Preta and Human Path functions. 253

Equipment

  • Nano-Bracelets — Used to communicate Nagato’s capture of the Eight-Tails and Two-Tails to the Empire Vanguard. 166
