Background / History
As Tongtian's chief disciple, Duobao initially regarded Bai Jin's frequent visits to Tongtian and the two Martial Uncles as a neglect of cultivation and a breach of proper discipleship. He dismissed Bai Jin as merely an Outer Sect Disciple and predicted that such a mentality could lead him astray 2.
When Western disciples visited Mount Kunlun, Tongtian assigned Duobao to host them. He maintained the sect's hospitality even when Ksitigarbha provoked Shi Ji, then listened closely to the Western teachings; their discussion of wu sparked a moment of enlightenment for him 8 13. Tongtian later commended his devotion to the Dao but told him that his path required practice rather than contemplation alone 19.
After Bai Jin became Head Outer Sect Disciple, dissatisfied disciples sought Duobao's protection. Though reluctant at first, Duobao accepted a teaching role and became the center of a liberal faction opposing Bai Jin's stricter Outer Sect rules 22 24.
Appearance
Duobao has a dignified, imposing presence and a broad build befitting Tongtian's chief disciple 7 42.
- Often cultivates in lotus position beneath the Youquan Waterfall 22.
- Carries himself with a formal and confident bearing when addressing seniors or leading disciples 42.
Personality
Duobao is proud, ambitious, and deeply committed to pursuing the Great Dao. He values cultivation, hierarchy, and the responsibilities of a senior disciple, but his pride frequently turns into rivalry—particularly toward Bai Jin, whose favor from their elders and influence among disciples he resents 2 16 35.
Despite claiming to disregard fleeting glory, Duobao is receptive to admiration and visibly enjoys the loyalty of disciples such as Dingguang Immortal with Long Ears. His desire to become a figure of authority develops into a pursuit of “self-dominance,” though he has not yet reached the true Dao associated with that path 19 22 24.
He is not blindly reckless toward every opponent. Having repeatedly suffered Bai Jin's schemes, he warns younger disciples that Bai Jin is dangerous, resourceful, and willing to act without restraint 40.
