Background / History

Crocodile once fought Douglas Bullet to a draw and later challenged Whitebeard, suffering a decisive defeat. He left the New World for Alabasta, where he pursued the Ancient Weapon Pluton. Although he had previously mastered Observation and Armament Haki, he neglected that training and eventually forgot how to use either 46.

In Alabasta, he led the assassin organization Baroque Works from Raindinners casino while cultivating a public reputation as a hero. His use of Dancing Powder contributed to drought outside Rainland, displacement and rebellion. He intended to exploit the resulting conflict to seize Pluton, relying on Robin to read the Poneglyph that he believed held information about it 42 341 348.

The supplied accounts differ on the outcome of his Alabasta campaign:

  • Reno account: Crocodile attacks the royal palace, but Reno counters his sand powers with water and kills him with a Haki-reinforced Hagoku 43 45 46.
  • Bai Luo and Luffy account: Luffy defeats Crocodile after a battle that destroys much of the palace. Smoker arrests him, and his crimes are exposed to Alabasta’s citizens 348 351 352.

The latter account continues with Crocodile imprisoned on Impel Down’s sixth floor. He offers to help Luffy rescue Ace in exchange for freedom and later attempts to attack Whitebeard, but Diamond Jozu drives him back 486 492 439. He subsequently joins Barrett’s Cross Guild, despite objecting to being treated as a subordinate; Barrett defeats him and draws his interest with information about the Great Treasure 608 609. Much later, Crocodile fights on the Straw Hat Pirates’ side against Marines Smoker and Hina 828.

Appearance

Crocodile is identified by a prominent facial scar, a golden hook and a cigar 38 339.

  • Clothing — wears a black cloak over a plaid shirt during his fight with Luffy 348.
  • After the Alabasta battle — is found with disheveled hair, blood and dirt on his body, and dust on his cloak 352.

Personality

Crocodile prizes strength and treats many of his agents as expendable; within Baroque Works, he particularly values Mr. 1, while Robin is indispensable because she can read Poneglyphs 39 43. He dismisses opponents he considers inexperienced, but becomes suspicious when they know details of his organization or his private history 318 339.

His ambition centers on obtaining Pluton and, later, the Great Treasure. Threats to those plans—and references to his secret involving Ivankov—can provoke him into reckless anger 43 46 609.
