Background / History

Whitebeard previously sailed with Kaido as part of the Rocks Pirates. At the time, Whitebeard was a division captain while Kaido was only a trainee; after Kaido later challenged him, Whitebeard defeated him decisively with the Tremor-Tremor Fruit at peak strength. 591

As captain of the Whitebeard Pirates, he treats his crew as sons rather than expendable subordinates. When Ace went missing, Whitebeard mobilized his division commanders and allied captains to search for him. Once the Marines announced Ace’s execution, he removed his medical tubes, summoned 52 affiliated crews, and sailed the Moby Dick toward war. 74 95

First Marineford War

Whitebeard entered the war despite being weakened by age, injuries, and constant medical treatment. He fought to rescue Ace, forgave Squard after Akainu manipulated him into attacking, and continued battling after Ace was executed. 95 114 117

After Ace’s death, Whitebeard used his tremors to split Marineford in two, ordering his surviving sons to escape while he remained behind against the Marines. 117 He continued fighting Akainu until Reno intervened, killed him, and took the Tremor-Tremor Fruit. Shanks later arrived and took Whitebeard’s body. 120

Return to Peak Strength

In later events surrounding another attempt to rescue Ace, Bai Luo gave Whitebeard wine that restored him to his prime condition. His hair turned golden, and his strength and aura returned to their peak state. 507 527 The restoration was later described as permanent. 598

With Ace rescued, Whitebeard confronted Blackbeard, whose Dark-Dark Fruit could cancel Devil Fruit powers. Whitebeard countered by using Haki, defeated Blackbeard, and personally executed him for betraying the crew and murdering Thatch. 527 528

Whitebeard is an imposing pirate distinguished by his long white beard, large stature, and signature cloak. During his earlier Marineford appearance, he was attached to IV drips and visibly weakened; after recovering his prime, his hair became a healthy golden color. 95 114 507 527
