Zoro trained at Shimotsuki Village alongside Kuina under Shimotsuki Koushirou. Both children persisted with their practice even when told to rest, and both desired to become the World's Greatest Swordsman. When Reno arrived seeking a disciple, Zoro and Kuina each asked to study under him; Reno chose Kuina and took her away, leaving Zoro discouraged but no less ambitious. 227 228

By the time of the Shells Town incident, Zoro was known as the Pirate Hunter.
