History

Casino encounter and captivity

Tony first encounters Wang Bert at an Atlantic City casino, where his competitiveness gets the better of him. Although he uses Jarvis to analyze Wang Bert's expressions and probable cards during Texas Hold'em, he repeatedly loses and keeps raising the stakes rather than accept defeat. Wang Bert secretly places a drop of blood into Tony's palm without his notice 12 13.

After demonstrating the Jericho Missile in the Middle East, Tony is critically wounded by a Stark Industries missile and captured by the Ten Rings. The shrapnel in his bloodstream requires an electromagnet to keep it from reaching his heart. With Dr. Yinsen's help, he miniaturizes the Arc Reactor—something Stark Industries had failed to do for decades—and uses it to power the Mark I armor 24.

Tony refuses Wang Bert's offered rescue, intending to escape on his own. The Mark I gets him out of the terrorist base but crashes after the weapons depot explodes; Wang Bert and Yinsen then recover him 24 25.

Becoming Iron Man

Learning that Stark weapons devastated Yinsen's hometown of Gomera convinces Tony to shut down Stark Industries' weapons business. After Obadiah Stane removes his Arc Reactor and leaves him to die, Yinsen restores the original cave-built reactor, allowing Tony to reach Stark Tower in the Mark III 28.

Tony ultimately needs Wang Bert's assistance against Obadiah and the Iron Monger. Following the battle, he publicly rejects S.H.I.E.L.D.'s cover story and announces that he is Iron Man 29.

Rivalries, illness, and hero work

Tony refuses to hand his armor to the military, regarding it as inseparable from himself. At the same time, his reactor's Palladium use causes poisoning; he insists on researching a replacement element despite Yinsen's warning that continued armor use shortens his life 34 41.

His confidence worsens after becoming a public hero. Wang Bert calls him reckless and arrogant, while Tony dismisses competitors such as Osborn Corporation and the Vankos as far behind his technology 41 45. His defeat by Abomination exposes the limits of his then-current armor, motivating further development 44.

Tony later fights alongside other heroes in crises including the Chitauri invasion, the Mandarin's attacks, HYDRA's operations, and interstellar conflicts. He develops and deploys Drone Armors, coordinates superhuman forces, and increasingly works as part of larger teams rather than solely as an individual combatant 114 156 236.

Future Time-Space conflict

When a future counterpart arrives seeking help against Thanos, Tony initially clashes with him but agrees to cooperate after learning how badly that universe's heroes failed. He is struck by the contrast between his own energetic demeanor and his counterpart's weariness 306.

Tony later opposes Old Tony, an authoritarian future version who kills heroes, uses Materialism Power to suppress supernatural abilities, and attempts to impose global order through robots and the Infinity Stones. Tony answers by proposing a Vibranium Legion and developing the Anti-Iron Man Armor 559 560 615 617.

After Old Tony's defeat, Tony is designated to remain as Iron Man in that universe while Wang Bert alters the population's memories. He subsequently faces hostile alternate Iron Men during a time-space fusion crisis 620 623.

Appearance

Tony is most often depicted in powered armor rather than civilian clothing. His principal Iron Man color scheme is gold and red, while later armor systems range from the crimson High-Temperature Armor to advanced nanoparticle suits 28 152 617.

His arrogance can become dangerous. Praise after his Iron Man debut leaves him convinced that he is “the strongest in every aspect,” and he repeatedly underestimates threats such as Abomination and Onslaught 41 44 625. Loki is also able to exploit Tony's recklessness and self-centered impulses to manipulate him into attacking the Helicarrier 82 84.

Despite this ego, Tony develops a stronger sense of responsibility after captivity. He closes Stark Industries' weapons division, pursues the people responsible for his company's weapons reaching terrorists, and later provides free armor upgrades to other heroes because he knows they may otherwise die in battle 28 569.
