Background / History
Thanos pursued what he called the “balance” of the universe through mass slaughter. He considered the extermination of half a population an act of mercy, including on Gamora’s homeworld, and genuinely believed survivors should be grateful for it 155. His ambitions made him a central threat to Earth, which he viewed as a growing obstacle to his plans.
He adopted Gamora and Nebula, though his treatment of them was brutal. Gamora became his adopted daughter but came to hate him, while Nebula’s repeated losses in their forced competitions led Thanos to replace parts of her body with machinery 154 179. He also commanded the Black Order and employed subordinates such as Ebony Maw, Supergiant, Corvus Glaive, Proxima Midnight, and Cull Obsidian.
After capturing Future Ant-Man and extracting his memories, Thanos learned of parallel universes and the Super Collider. He changed his objective from culling half of life in one universe to erasing all life across countless universes, intending to let the heroes gather Infinity Stones before taking them for himself 321.
The Goddess of Death aided his campaign by reviving Dr. Pym and Janet van Dyne, allowing Thanos to coerce Pym into producing Pym Particles for time-space travel 325. Later, Thanos became a Creator God by devouring alternate versions of himself, believing this power would finally let him kill Wang Bert and fulfill his “destiny” 556 588.
His final campaign against Wang Bert failed after the Blood God trapped him in the Mind Sea and created the Resentment Universe from the hatred of beings harmed by Thanos’s actions. Over six years inside that universe, endlessly regenerating resentment phantoms exhausted and weakened him beyond resistance 612 613 618. Wang Bert ultimately extracted and absorbed Thanos’s soul after Death bore witness to his death 619.
Appearance
Thanos is an enormous purple-skinned Titan who commonly wears golden armor and carries a massive bladed weapon. He can enlarge his body to a scale greater than an entire planet 333 612.
- Purple skin and towering, heavily built frame.
- Golden combat armor.
- Usually armed with a double-ended Tyrant Blade.
- Can form gigantic Titan bodies through his powers 333 592.
Personality
Thanos is fanatically convinced that he embodies destiny. He treats other beings as “insects” or “ants,” rejects the idea that his massacres are immoral, and frames mass death as necessary cosmic balance 321 613.
Although arrogant in battle, he became markedly more cautious after repeated defeats by Wang Bert. He began hiding isotopes outside the battlefield, using proxies, and preparing escape routes before major fights 593 612. His caution often conflicted with his pride: he refused to abandon his conviction that he was destined to prevail, even when his plans collapsed.
His devotion to Death is deeply one-sided. Thanos believed he had to protect and save her, while Death later made clear that she regarded him only as a tool and joined Wang Bert in defeating him 613 619.
Abilities & Skills
Creator God Physiology
After devouring alternate versions of himself, Thanos ascended to Creator God status 588.
- Possesses overwhelming physical strength, durability, and regeneration.
- Can survive attacks capable of destroying planets and continue fighting while seriously wounded 608.
- Can enlarge himself beyond planetary scale and attack with world-destroying force 612.
- Can reconstruct his body after self-destruction or severe damage 592 595.
Titan Power and Concept of Power
Thanos possesses Titan Power as an Eternal and uses the Concept of Power as his core combat concept 586 591.
- His Titan Fist generates spatially destructive shockwaves and can tear open space 586 591.
- Titan Power was strong enough to bypass Iron Man’s Materialism Power when loaned to Ebony Maw 586.
- His physical power can increase continuously during a direct confrontation, though Wang Bert’s invincible conviction eventually outpaced it 592.
- His concepts and Creator God-level abilities were restricted when Wang Bert forced him into Fair Space at God level 591.
Devouring Concept
Thanos can devour alternate versions of himself and absorb their strength.
- Used devoured variants to become a Creator God 588.
- Can absorb residual power from battlefields to replenish himself 592.
- His Devouring Concept is tied to his ability to create and summon isotopes 592.
- Devouring his variants created a critical weakness: Wang Bert’s Mind Poison turned those absorbed variants against him 595 596.
Isotope Concept
Thanos can summon versions of himself created from the alternate selves he has devoured.
- Summoned more than one hundred God-level Thanoses while restricted within Fair Space 592.
- Claimed to have devoured more than a thousand isotopes and kept additional isotopes outside the battlefield as insurance against death 593.
- Isotopes can overwhelm opponents through numbers, but their resentment toward being devoured made them vulnerable to Wang Bert’s Mind Poison 595 596.
Death Power
The Goddess of Death provided Thanos with limited assistance during his assault on Future Time-Space.
- Death concealed Sanctuary from detection and empowered his blade with a strand of Death Power 332.
- The Death Power forced Wang Bert into visions of his own death and nearly killed him after he had used the Infinity Gauntlet 333.
- Death later withdrew her support and personally helped Wang Bert restrain Thanos in the Mind Sea 613.
Strategic Planning
Thanos is a long-term planner who combines infiltration, hostage-taking, multiversal travel, and overwhelming force.
- Extracted Future Ant-Man’s memories to learn of the multiverse and the Super Collider 321.
- Ordered Supergiant to possess Future Ant-Man and infiltrate the heroes’ operation from within 321 328.
- Used a giant body formed from one of his hands as a decoy before attacking Earth with his true consciousness elsewhere 612.
- Repeatedly sought Materialism Power as a means to counter Wang Bert 578 585.
Equipment / Weapons / Items

- Gamora — Adopted daughter who hated him for slaughtering half her homeworld. She warned Earth about his plans and later opposed him 154 155.
- Nebula — Adopted daughter. Thanos replaced parts of her body with machinery after she lost competitions against Gamora 179.
- Goddess of Death — Thanos worshipped and believed he served her destiny. She provided him aid but ultimately stated she had no personal feelings for him and helped Wang Bert defeat him 325 613.
- Supergiant — Black Order subordinate entrusted with possessing Future Ant-Man and infiltrating the heroes’ universe 321.
- Ebony Maw — Black Order subordinate who wielded Titan Power borrowed from Thanos 586.
- Arishem — Celestial who rescued Thanos from Wang Bert’s Mind Poison and attempted to recruit him against Iron Man 595 596.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Earth and the Ravager Scheme
Thanos arranged for the Ravagers to target Earth and the Space Stone, intending to cripple humanity’s development and eventually destroy the planet if its heroes continued growing stronger 154 155. Gamora’s warning exposed his intentions, and Earth decisively defeated the Ravager fleet 155 157.
Multiversal Ambition
After acquiring Future Ant-Man’s memories, Thanos learned that parallel universes existed. He planned to exploit the heroes’ Infinity Stone hunt, take the completed set for himself, and erase life across countless realities 321.
Future Time-Space War
Thanos ambushed Wang Bert and the heroes in Future Time-Space with two Sanctuaries and two Thanos forces. He fought multiple Avengers, Hulks, Captain Marvel, and other heroes while trying to seize the Infinity Gauntlet 333 334 335.
One Thanos was killed by Hulk’s energy-infused bone spear after Wanda and Future Wanda restrained him. Another was later annihilated by Wang Bert’s Thunder Pool, though his soul’s ultimate fate initially remained uncertain 338 340.
Creator God Conflict
Having become a Creator God through devouring alternate selves, Thanos returned with Titan Power, the Isotope Concept, and a plan to seize Materialism Power. He allied with the Celestial Group and the strongest Eternals while attempting to isolate Wang Bert from his true body 588 596 609.
Defeat in the Mind Sea
Thanos attempted to destroy Earth but was dragged into Wang Bert’s Mind Sea after splitting his consciousness. Wang Bert used the universal hatred generated by the Snap, summoned Death, and constructed the Resentment Universe specifically to destroy him 612 613.
After six years of attrition within the Resentment Universe, Thanos was reduced to helplessness. Wang Bert extracted his soul, Death acknowledged his death, and his body and soul were retained for future use 618 619.
