Xin Lan comes from a family whose ancestor helped found the Pill Region. The Ye Family retains control of Ye City, but its declining alchemical talent threatens its inherited elder’s seat in the Pill Tower. Three failed assessments would cost the family that seat, leaving it vulnerable to rivals 527 553.

She travels to Jia Nan Academy specifically to seek Nalan Chaoge, whose seventh-grade alchemist rank could rescue her family. His confinement underground initially frustrates that plan. After his return, Su Qian introduces them, and Xin Lan uses information about Heavenly Flames and the Bodhi Ancient Tree to encourage him to travel to the Central Plains 524 525 527.

When she finally explains her purpose, Xin Lan kneels and offers marriage as a way to make Nalan eligible to represent the Ye Family. She proposes both a nominal marriage with a later divorce and a genuine marriage. Nalan rejects these arrangements as sacrifices of her future and suggests adoption or a sibling relationship instead 527.

Journey to the Central Plains

News that the Bodhi Ancient Tree will appear in roughly ten months persuades Nalan to depart immediately, with Xin Lan guiding him toward her clan. Xiao Yi Xian, Kimimaro, and Yang accompany the journey before planning a temporary separation 526 528.
