History

Early Conflicts with Soul Society

The Soul King created Hueco Mundo alongside Soul Society, the World of the Living, and the Dangai 278. Centuries before the expedition, Szayelaporro Granz led an Adjuchas invasion of Soul Society to acquire experimental materials, then returned safely to Hueco Mundo 298.

During his tenure as Eleventh Division captain, Sōya Azashiro proposed converting Rukongai residents into war machines to wage war against Hueco Mundo and eradicate Hollows. His subsequent conflict with Soul Society ended in imprisonment in Muken 118.

Adjuchas Anomaly & Expedition

Soul Society periodically sends expeditionary forces into the Forest of Menos to eliminate Gillians and Adjuchas with the potential to become Vasto Lordes. These operations are intended to prevent excessive Menos populations from destabilizing Soul Society and the World of the Living 257.

The Technological Development Department detects more than five times the expected number of Adjuchas, prompting preparations for a larger expedition. Aizen commands the force, assisted by Tōsen Kaname and Ichimaru Gin 257 270.

Makoto initially suspects the anomaly is an illusion manufactured by Aizen to justify weakening Barragan’s forces. Later intelligence identifies its actual source as Snopas’s organized population in the Forest of Menos 270 282 321. More than six hundred rudimentary Adjuchas eventually lead an immense Gillian horde toward the expedition’s camp 326.

Barragan’s Displacement

Barragan attempts to force Harribel into submission, pursuing her with a large Adjuchas force. Makoto intervenes under his Hollow disguise, protecting her companions with a forest of withered trees 280 286 289.

Makoto later traps Barragan’s horde in a much larger forest and prepares to purify it. Aizen arrives with Starrk and Ulquiorra, interrupting the attempt and challenging Barragan’s authority 305 306. Rather than openly fight Aizen, Makoto accepts the position of NO.0 to infiltrate his organization. Barragan submits to Aizen out of fear while retaining his resentment 308 309.

Consolidation under Las Noches

Las Noches eventually brings both the surface and the Forest of Menos nominally under its rule. Aizen directs the Espada to mobilize Hueco Mundo’s resources and locate special Hollows 503.

Makoto also uses Hueco Mundo for covert research and Reiryoku accumulation. His plans include integrating Seeds into Espada and Adjuchas, both to harvest power and influence their minds 325. His Asura Yan Cheng identity persists as a royal legend long after his disappearance 401 640.

Rescue Missions & Confrontations with Aizen

Aizen takes Nel back to Hueco Mundo after using Yoruichi’s critical injuries to compel her cooperation 625. Makoto later leads Unohana, Soi Fon, Byakuya, Hisagi, Nanao, and Rangiku through a Garganta to recover her from Las Noches 633 634.

During the ensuing confrontation, Harribel recognizes Makoto as Asura Yan Cheng and joins his side against Aizen 649. A later abduction of Kurosaki Masaki again draws rescuers into Hueco Mundo; Isshin realizes the incident was designed to force Kurosaki Makoto out of hiding 739 749.

Wandenreich Assault

A drastic reduction in Hollow numbers triggers a captains’ meeting. Despite Soul Society’s suspicions, Aizen is not responsible: he has left Hueco Mundo to Arrancar self-government while maintaining an illusion of his continued presence outside Las Noches 755.

Yhwach’s organization attacks Las Noches, rapidly destroying half of it and overwhelming its defenders. Starrk, Ulquiorra, Harribel, Nel, and Grimmjow all release their Resurrección, but the attackers besiege and overpower them. Harribel is easily defeated by Yhwach 755.

The later revelation that Aizen and Makoto have always been allies leads Yhwach to recognize Hueco Mundo as part of their broader control over the world 836.

Access & Travel

• Garganta: Used by the expeditionary force, Aizen, and Makoto’s rescue party to enter or leave Hueco Mundo. Urahara opens one through a special technique beneath his shop 277 625 633.
• King’s Seal: Restores Sōjirō Kusaka’s incomplete spiritual body and sends him to Hueco Mundo. He later uses it to open a gate through which Arrancar and Hollow hordes invade Seireitei 509 534.
