Background / History

Death and Fate Exchange

Wang Rui dies in a hit-and-run accident and finds himself beside his own corpse, unable to answer a ringing phone associated with his sister. The original Three-Eyed Golden Lion approaches him and offers a fate exchange that will allow him to live again 1.

The beast regrets allowing Star Dou’s fortune to leave for the Divine Realm after her sacrifice for Huo Yuhao. She asks Wang Rui to preserve the soul beasts’ future and, if possible, look after Yuhao. Wang Rui accepts the exchange, partly because it offers another life without bringing further suffering to his family 2.

He enters Douluo with knowledge of its original story, although his recollection is incomplete. His reliance on that story later causes him to overlook major changes, particularly Huo Yuqing’s gender 1 91.

Life in Star Dou

Wang Rui grows up in the same den as An Wen, Tiger Empress Dark Cloud’s daughter. Dark Cloud treats him as her own child, and he contributes knowledge to the soul beasts’ reconstruction of advanced forging methods 23 53.

During Dark Cloud’s seventh great tribulation, she attempts Heavenly Forging using her body, soul ring, and soul bone. Her essence merges with the metal, but restrictions imposed by the Divine Realm prevent true Heavenly Forging. The result instead reaches Soul Forging and carries a faint Destruction aura 23 24.

The Cursed Soul Bones

After witnessing humans slaughter weak, herd-based soul beasts to mass-produce Secret Method Soul Bones, Wang Rui joins powerful beasts in ambushing the perpetrators. He then curses every Secret Method Soul Bone through the Eye of Destiny, causing their possessors to die while hunting soul beasts and creating the legend of the “Cursed Soul Bones” 103.

Some Fierce Beasts object to risking strong beasts for weak species. The Silver Dragon King reprimands him, and Di Tian and Zi Ji are compelled to confine him to Star Dou’s core region. This teaches Wang Rui that Star Dou’s leadership does not necessarily share his ideals and convinces him to build a force loyal to his own authority 103.

Concealing His Bloodline

Two hundred years before the academy storyline, the Golden Dragon Spear descends into Douluo and seeks Wang Rui’s Golden Dragon King bloodline. He sends Di Feng to take it away, separating the puppet from his true identity so thoroughly that Tang San mistakes Di Feng for a female human carrying that bloodline 105.

Tang San subsequently targets both Di Feng’s supposed bloodline and the Auspicious Beast’s fortune. Wang Rui uses the puppet’s apparent death to remove that identity from public attention 105.
