Background / History
Yang Jian was the son of Yao Ji. After the Heavenly Court captured his mother and scattered his family, the teenage Yang Jian was pursued by Heavenly Soldiers and Generals. He swore to make them regret their actions if he survived, establishing the rescue of his family as the driving purpose of his cultivation 2.
Chen Changsheng saved him from the pursuing soldiers and accepted him as Changsheng Palace’s first disciple. Yang Jian chose discipleship because he understood that he could not gain the power needed to find his family alone 3. Although the palace’s initially dilapidated condition disappointed him, he remained with Chen Changsheng and entered the Scripture Pavilion in search of a suitable path 3 4.
After seven days of searching, Yang Jian received the Double Pupils inheritance. Its murderous aura frightened him at first, but thoughts of Yao Ji gave him the resolve to continue cultivating it 5. His rapid advancement established him as Changsheng Palace’s eldest disciple and brought attention from True Lord Jade Cauldron, whose intended master-disciple fate with Yang Jian had been severed 4 16.
Yang Jian later left Changsheng Palace to gain experience, returning briefly to the ruined home of the Yang family in Guangjiang Pass. He reaffirmed his intention to reunite his parents, elder brother, and younger sister before departing again to seek strength 24.
Appearance
Yang Jian first appears as a teenager, then develops into a composed young man whose aura resembles that of a battle-hardened general after a year of cultivation 6.
- Possesses Double Pupils when using his inherited technique 14.
- Bears a Heavenly Eye on his forehead, later used as the conduit for the Eye of Destruction 15 202.
- Is commonly seen wielding the Three-Pointed Double-Edged Halberd or the War God Axe 19 115.
- Later appears in shining silver armor as True Lord Erlang of Guangjiang Pass 469.
Personality
Yang Jian is intensely filial. Nearly every major decision in his cultivation stems from his desire to rescue Yao Ji, reunite his family, and later recover his elder brother Yang Jiao from the Western Teachings 7 67 180. He is willing to endure painful trials, prolonged seclusion, and confrontations with the Heavenly Court to achieve those goals.
He is loyal to Chen Changsheng and Changsheng Palace. When True Lord Jade Cauldron attempts to recruit him into the Chan Sect, Yang Jian states that his heart contains only Changsheng Palace and his master 18. Even when he leaves to establish his own sect, he vows never to forget his origins or abandon Changsheng Palace 185.
Yang Jian is direct and confrontational toward enemies, especially those who oppress humans or exploit the weak. He intervenes against demons threatening human soldiers, saves Hou Yan from a demonic siege, attacks the Southern Heavenly Gate, and refuses Jia Ye’s attempts to convert him 25 35 121 149. However, he also shows restraint when circumstances require it, sparing the Three-Headed Flood Dragon’s soul by allowing it to become his halberd’s Weapon Spirit rather than killing it outright 26.
