A flashback to Bronya and Seele's past states that Bronya lost the use of her legs to Honkai energy, suffered brain damage that left her unable to feel joy or smile, and was separated from Seele. 44

While protecting Mei, Bronya burns out her brain chip and falls into a coma. Her body can be repaired, but she cannot awaken because she lacks the desire to live. 56 Inside her consciousness, she sees herself as a sinner responsible for countless deaths, betrayal, and harm to the people she values; she initially considers death the only way to stop hurting others. 57

Ye Ming enters her consciousness through the Feather of the Crossing and refuses to abandon her.
