Background
Yao Yingqian is a seeded rogue player whose title, Insect Master, reflects his combat style of controlling Gu worms 235. His cultivation is costly: after raising another Gu King, he is reduced to a skin-and-bones state because he cannot afford recovery medicine 335.
He initially builds a transactional relationship with Chen Yi by selling him Gu-related materials, including Emotion Worm larvae and the supplies required to cultivate them. His pricing is opportunistic, charging Chen Yi 899,999 copper coins for powder, a Gu-raising vessel, incense, and larvae 374.
During the Noxus–Demacia war, he becomes Chen Yi's contracted operative. He accepts dangerous assignments in exchange for equipment, Gu worms, and other rewards, including a plan to locate and capture LeBlanc's true mirror image 387 388. His association with Chen Yi later develops into a long-running partnership involving battlefield work, commerce, intelligence, and resource acquisition 961 987 1508.
Appearance
Yao Yingqian's appearance visibly deteriorates when he lacks funds to sustain himself and his Gu worms. After expensive Gu cultivation, he is described as little more than skin and bones 335. Following a prolonged War Mode campaign, he appears weathered and exhausted 762.
- Can disperse his body into countless tiny Gu worms to evade attacks or move through the ground 987.
- Later survives a crisis by transforming into law worms 1458.
- Has been suspended upside down by the Chains of Heaven on multiple occasions 687 987.
Personality
Yao Yingqian is intensely profit-driven. He continually seeks payment, business opportunities, or alternative forms of compensation, whether selling Gu supplies, offering bodyguard services, or negotiating work for Chen Yi 374 372 1229. Maintaining and evolving his Gu worms regularly leaves him short on copper coins, but he continues investing heavily in them 335 373.
He is exceptionally talkative, frequently overwhelming allies and strangers with rambling conversations about Gu cultivation, sales, or unrelated topics. His chatter is so persistent that other players beg for someone to silence him 595 914. He can immediately become serious when a contract, profit, or dangerous mission is involved, carefully inspecting agreements before signing 373 387.
Despite his opportunism and cowardly instincts, he repeatedly accepts high-risk work for Chen Yi. He openly takes pride in Chen Yi's overwhelming strength and regards the latter's success as a source of personal prestige 387 901.
Abilities & Skills
Gu Worm Control
Yao Yingqian commands Gu worms for direct combat, poisoning, infiltration, and battlefield disruption.
- Controls Gu worms inside Demacian soldiers, allowing the victims to appear alive while fighting at roughly 80% of their original combat capability 387.
- Pre-plants poisons that emerge during combat and strike entire groups simultaneously 387 384.
- Uses swarms of Gu worms to overwhelm enemies; even durable tanks and Warriors can be submerged by the swarm 384.
- His Gu-based methods require extensive spending on worms, medicine, poisons, tools, and recovery supplies 335.
Gu Kings
He cultivates and commands specialized Gu Kings with distinct functions.
- Rotting Spider Gu King — traps and weakens enemies 901.
- Nether Ghost Fire Butterfly — a butterfly-shaped Gu King called “Little Fire”; its combat power is not naturally outstanding, but it remains one of Yao Yingqian's notable summons 952 1229.
- Shadow Jade Snake — used defensively against shadow-based attacks, though it can be overwhelmed by stronger opponents 1510.
- He later states that his Gu Spirit Path no longer requires Gu Kings as his primary method of combat; he can draw special characteristics from them through Gu transformation instead 1508.
Gu Spirit Path and Law Worms
Yao Yingqian's later path centers on commanding spirits through Gu rather than merely directing physical insects.
- Uses Gu transformation to access the special traits of his Gu Kings 1508.
- Restores a law worm at great expense after acquiring it from Chen Yi 1135.
- Transforms into law worms to survive while trapped in a Small World 1458.
- Can compose letters from Gu worms; without the correct item, the message disperses back into worms when opened 1458.
Commerce and Negotiation
Yao Yingqian supplements his cultivation through aggressive salesmanship and deal-making.
- Sells Gu-related goods and services, including snacks, drinks, bodyguard work, Gu supplies, and custom cultivation equipment 372 374 914.
- Claims his Gu worms can identify players who use firearms or explosives, allowing him to target potential customers 762.
- Helps Chen Yi obtain items through negotiation and market activity, including a discounted fishing rod with unusual resentments 1229.
- Accepted 200,000 copper coins to negotiate with the Fire Dragon for a month on Chen Yi's behalf 594.
Equipment / Items
- Forbidden Boots — Gold-quality boots granting +30 Agility and increasing the range of Sealing Jutsu-related Cursed Techniques by 10%; sold to Chen Yi by Yao Yingqian 335.
- Gu cultivation supplies — Keeps and sells Gu worms, medicinal herbs, poisons, potions, utensils, culture dishes, incense, and Gu-raising vessels 335 374 914.
- Fishing rod — Acquires a discounted World-class fishing rod for Chen Yi at a cost of 700,000 War Merit 1229.
- Chains of Heaven — Temporarily handles Chen Yi's divine weapon under contract, including employing poison-based methods that increase its spirituality 595 658.
Relationships
- Chen Yi — Employer, benefactor, and recurring business partner. Yao Yingqian calls him “Boss” or “big brother,” accepts contracts to perform dangerous missions for him, and later follows him into Rank 7 warfare 373 387 1509.
- Chuka — Mutual antagonists. Yao Yingqian teases Chuka about her skill name, while Chuka retaliates by having him hung upside down and physically beating him 1062 987.
- San Hua / Scattered Flowers — Fellow high-level player and commercial rival. They both seek to sell resources to Chen Yi and later accompany him in the Yin Yang Twin Life World 1508 1509.
- Qianqiu Yue — Teases her about Chen Yi recognizing her potential, then asks her to reinforce his equipment 1230.
- Beef Eater — Has a tense encounter with him during the Plague Elf conflict, accepting a deal connected to preserving his life 903.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Emotion Worm Supplier
Yao Yingqian first enters Chen Yi's orbit as a Gu-worm seller and expert. He provides the materials and instructions used to contract Emotion Worm larvae, though Chen Yi recognizes that he is being heavily overcharged 374.
Noxus–Demacia War
He joins Chen Yi in the Noxian military camp, where he discusses his financial problems and base-attribute limitations before signing a contract to assist with Chen Yi's plans 373. He eliminates Dynasty Guild players with swarms and pre-planted poison, earning purple Enchantment Cards as mission payment 384.
Operation Against LeBlanc
Chen Yi recruits Yao Yingqian as an external operative because acting personally would draw too much attention. Yao Yingqian accepts the mission after being offered valuable equipment, a sealed centipede, and an externally usable Flame Seal Sword card 387. His most dangerous task is to capture LeBlanc's actual mirror image for use as a medium in Chen Yi's planned finishing strike 388.
War Mode and Battlefield Service
Yao Yingqian continues participating in War Mode, operating across seven battlefields and achieving the highest arena ranking among the participants in one campaign 762. During the Plague Elf war, he serves as the main commander aboard the Zhuque warship while Chen Yi acts as deputy commander 961.
Rank 7 Campaigns
After reaching Rank 7, Yao Yingqian becomes part of Chen Yi's wider military efforts alongside San Hua. His presence reassures San Hua when Chen Yi announces that he can hold off Rank 8 opponents 1509. He later uses the Shadow Jade Snake against an Ancient Sun Dynasty infiltrator, but requires protection against stronger shadow techniques 1510.
