Background / History

Hidan was Togo Hayato's disciple during his time in Yugakure. Six months before the Evil God Cult incident, he accompanied Hayato home and witnessed Kirigakure forces under Karatachi Yagura annihilate the village. The destruction, Yugakure's inability to respond, and later Kumogakure coercion left Hidan disillusioned with his village; he eventually departed Yugakure. 81

He met Uchiha Ci after pulling him from the newly formed Hot Spring River. Though Hidan lacked ninja-level chakra, he recognized Ci as someone who had not fled from danger because Ci had no wounds on his back. He returned Ci's Uchiha scroll and introduced himself with grand ambitions: to save the Land of Hot Water, drive out the great nations' ninja, become Mizukage, and rise as a “Demigod.” 25

The suffering he had witnessed across the Land of Hot Water drew Hidan toward the Evil God Cult. He initially regarded its rituals as a path to power and invited Ci to join as a sacrifice, believing they could secure a “bright future.” 27 Ci challenged this belief, arguing that surrendering his ideals to the cult was merely escape. Hidan ultimately chose to oppose the cult and place his faith in Ci's promise to change the ninja world. 35 82

Appearance

At his introduction, Hidan is a young boy with short, slicked-back black hair. He wears a black fitted combat suit beneath a Konoha jonin vest. 25

Personality

Hidan is boastful, theatrical, and intensely proud of his self-proclaimed status as “This Master.” He openly declares ambitions far beyond his ability, yet his bravado stems from a sincere desire to protect the Land of Hot Water rather than simple vanity. 25 38

He is impulsive and initially inexperienced, but not unintelligent. He notices the human cost of the great nations' wars, understands Yugakure's weakness, and can provide useful knowledge of the Evil God Cult's territory. 27 40 His experiences make him vulnerable to manipulation, particularly by Togo Hayato and later Orochimaru. 82 393

Despite his erratic behavior, Hidan is deeply loyal to Uchiha Ci. He rejects the Evil God when forced to choose between the cult and Ci, protects Ci while severely injured, and later accepts Orochimaru's contract solely to save him. 82 393

Evil God Cult Arc

Hidan guides Ci toward the Evil God Cult headquarters and joins Ci, Mei Terumi, and Shennong's infiltration effort. He is used as the bounty target during Kakuzu's intervention, survives being kicked from a 400-meter cliff, and is eventually captured by Kakuzu. 38 42 44 51

The cult later captures Hidan and nails him to a cross for the “Deity Bleeds” ritual. He tears himself free, rejects the Evil God, and declares that he will save the Land of Hot Water in his own way. Togo Hayato then forcibly awakens Hidan's curse ability and attempts to turn him into a weapon against Ci. 79 82

Undying Heretics and Yunming City

Hidan becomes associated with the Undying Heretics operating under Uchiha Ci's name. When Kumogakure captures Yugakure rebels, he seeks outside assistance rather than abandoning them, accepting Mei Terumi's aid and later negotiating with Iwagakure in hopes of preserving the Land of Hot Water. 234 279 314

Land of Lightning War

Hidan uses the Third Raikage's blood to invoke Blood Controlled Death. Iwagakure treats him as an expendable weapon, restraining and brutally wounding him to magnify the curse against the Raikage. 375 381

After the battle, Uchiha Ci heals Hidan's shattered body and carries him away from the Iwagakure forces. Hidan then helps the exhausted Ci after Ci collapses. 392

Orochimaru's Contract

Desperate to save Ci, Hidan agrees to work for Orochimaru. After Ci awakens twenty-six days later, Ci advises Hidan to remain with Orochimaru for the time being. 393
