Background / History
Madara was once a co-founder of Konohagakure alongside Hashirama Senju. Their original dream was to build a world in which children would not be forced onto battlefields, but Madara’s repeated losses—especially those of his brothers—left him deeply conscious of the fragility of peace 429 481.
His break with Hashirama centered on the latter’s decision to distribute Tailed Beasts among the nations. Madara believed this would preserve conflict rather than end it, while Hashirama considered it necessary to halt the ongoing wars and stabilize the new village system 482. Madara later concluded that the world itself was fundamentally flawed and developed the Moon Eye Plan as his answer: a dreamlike world free from chakra-driven conflict 483.
By the time of his first present-day appearance, Madara survives in the Evil God Cult’s underground caves. Though physically withered, he retains control over the Third Mizukage and uses a captured Three-Tails Jinchuriki’s chakra to prolong his life through the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 67.
Madara notices Uchiha Ci early, regarding the boy’s ambitions as reminiscent of his own youth. He ultimately chooses Ci as a potential successor, intending to awaken Ci’s eyes through grief and hatred so that Ci will accept the Moon Eye Plan 73 427. Despite this, Ci remains determined to eliminate him.
Appearance
In his elderly state, Madara is an aged, frail man who relies on a cane or Reaper Scythe and is physically connected to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. When preparing for battle, he discards his robe for combat attire and manifests his Rinnegan 427 484.
- Wears crimson layered armor, although it hangs loosely on his aged body 484.
- Carries the Uchiha Flame Fan and a Reaper Scythe 427 490.
- Has Hashirama’s flesh implanted in his chest, forming the Hashirama Visage and granting access to Hashirama cells 267.
- Is connected to the Demonic Statue by brown-yellow tubes extending from his back 484.
- As the complete Ten-Tails’ Jinchuriki, develops pale skin, a white Six Paths coat with black tomoe, and a vertical forehead eye 567.
Personality
Madara is openly contemptuous toward weakness, shallow ambition, and those who rely on another’s strength. He dismisses the Third Mizukage’s lack of talent, mocks Ci’s early plans, and considers verbal ideals meaningless without power to enforce them 67 73.
His arrogance in combat is paired with exceptional caution. He deliberately conceals stronger techniques until necessary, tests opponents at lower levels of force, and uses deception, clones, hidden White Zetsu spores, and delayed reveals to secure victory 494 495.
Despite his ruthlessness, Madara is not portrayed as indiscriminately murderous. He regards slaughter as a means rather than an objective, spares the Uchiha Clan members who once rejected him, and carefully considers which loss would most affect Ci rather than simply massacring the clan 429. He also saves Shisui from collapsing during reckless training, though he remains focused on using suffering to shape Ci 429 430.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan
Madara possesses Sharingan powerful enough to control individuals, alter memories, and project large-scale genjutsu. His Mangekyo evolves into the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan after incorporating Izuna’s eyes 67 480.
- Controls the Third Mizukage with Sharingan genjutsu 67.
- Causes Konoha’s guards and civilians to forget his presence while entering the village 427.
- Casts Limited Tsukuyomi on Ci to show him Madara’s past and ideology 480 483.
- Uses the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan to transmit the principles of God Tsukuyomi and God Style: Deep Forest Emergence to Ci 483.
Rinnegan
After recovering his Rinnegan, Madara gains access to advanced Six Paths techniques and dōjutsu beyond ordinary Shinobi limits 484.
- Uses the Devouring Path’s Sealing Technique: Absorption Seal to absorb ninjutsu and Sage Art chakra 488.
- Employs Rinnegan genjutsu against Ci 490.
- Uses Limbo: Hell’s Gate, generating unseen shadows capable of independent combat 485 489.
- Can use Rinnegan abilities and summon a Complete Body Susanoo even without eyes, according to Ci’s assessment 331.
Amenotachikara
Madara uses Amenotachikara to rewind time on Ci’s damaged body, restoring injuries that should have been fatal 268.
- Repairs severe physical damage by reversing its prior state 268.
- Demonstrates Madara’s interest in Ci as a viable contingency for his long-term plan 267 268.
Susanoo
Madara can manifest Susanoo at multiple levels, including an Armored Susanoo and a Complete Body Susanoo 331 486.
- Summons an Armored Susanoo to defend the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 486.
- Uses Susanoo: Dance of Two Swords through the Rinnegan, severing Ci’s arm in a single attack 485.
- Can create multiple Susanoo through Wood Clones when supplied by the Demonic Statue’s chakra 424.
Hashirama Cells and Wood Style
Madara implanted Hashirama’s flesh into his body after the Valley of the End, forming the Hashirama Visage and granting him Hashirama cells 267.
- Uses the cells to improve compatibility with White Zetsu Mimicry and support Izanagi 267.
- Can employ Wood Style through the Hashirama Visage 424.
- Has a body capable of accommodating Sage Art chakra, unlike ordinary Rinnegan users 488.
Demonic Statue of the Outer Path
The Demonic Statue is Madara’s primary source of sustained chakra and his vessel for restoring the Ten-Tails 67 496.
- Converts extracted chakra into life force to sustain his aging body 67.
- Supplies near-endless chakra and enables repeated large-scale summons 424.
- Is protected by Madara’s Susanoo during his confrontation with Ci 486.
- Serves as the shell used to revive the Ten-Tails 496 497.
Tensei Technique and White Zetsu Methods
Madara uses advanced body-replacement and surveillance methods to conceal his true position and manipulate the battlefield 494 495.
- Creates a combat body through the Tensei Technique, causing Ci to seal a false target 495.
- Plants White Zetsu spores inside Ci to monitor his movements and predict his teleportation destination 494.
- Intends to use White Zetsu Mimicry to repair Ci’s body and facilitate transplants 267.
Ten-Tails and Six Paths Power
Madara revives the Ten-Tails by using Ci’s chakra as a substitute for the missing Tailed Beasts, then becomes its Jinchuriki when forced to confront Ci’s Susanoo God 497 503.
- Extracts Ci’s chakra because it can generate genuine Tailed Beast chakra rather than merely imitate Tailed Beast abilities 497.
- Controls the incomplete Ten-Tails alongside Limbo and Susanoo 502.
- Becomes the Ten-Tails’ Jinchuriki and reaches the Six Paths level 503.
- Absorbs the complete Ten-Tails after his later revival, gaining the capacity to cast Infinite Tsukuyomi 567.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Kirigakure Manipulation
Madara operates beneath the Evil God Cult’s caves, extracts chakra from a Three-Tails Jinchuriki, and controls the Third Mizukage to maintain influence over Kirigakure 67. After learning of Ci, he begins treating the younger Uchiha as an observation target 73 316.
Uchiha Ci Contingency
When Ci is critically injured, Madara plans to restore him using White Zetsu Mimicry, Hashirama cells, and Madara’s own Sharingan. Ci’s unexpected Mangekyo awakening instead reveals that he is growing beyond Madara’s expectations 267 268.
Uchiha Clan Reunion
Madara returns to Konoha, erases witnesses’ memories with the Rinnegan, and infiltrates the Uchiha compound to force Ci’s Sharingan to evolve through loss 427. His planned “death list” is intended to identify the person whose death would cause Ci the greatest despair, but his actions are delayed by his complicated attachment to the clan 429 430.
Limited Tsukuyomi and Succession
Madara traps Ci in Limited Tsukuyomi and reveals his history with Hashirama, his disillusionment with chakra, and his vision of a world remade through the Moon Eye Plan 480 483. He teaches Ci God Tsukuyomi and God Style: Deep Forest Emergence, then challenges him to survive and inherit Madara’s name 483.
Battle Against Uchiha Ci
Madara regains the Rinnegan and fights Ci with the Demonic Statue, Susanoo, Limbo shadows, genjutsu, and White Zetsu surveillance 484 495. He outmaneuvers Ci’s sealing plan by revealing that the sealed opponent was only a Tensei body 495.
Ten-Tails Revival and Defeat
Using Ci’s unusual chakra as a substitute for seven Tailed Beasts, Madara revives the Ten-Tails and becomes its Jinchuriki after Ci’s Susanoo God threatens his control 497 503. Ci eventually defeats him with Great Sun Falls, exploiting Madara’s hesitation to fully rely on the incomplete Ten-Tails 507.
Revival and Fourth Shinobi World War
Madara is revived through Impure World Reincarnation, seals Black Zetsu, and later joins Orochimaru in the race to complete the Moon Eye Plan 508 566. After absorbing the complete Ten-Tails, he gains the ability to launch Infinite Tsukuyomi 567.
