Background and History
Setsuna is a survivor of the Warring States Period and a former follower of Madara Uchiha. He opposed the Second Hokage’s treatment of the Uchiha and once plotted to assassinate him. As Great Elder and Hawk Faction leader, Setsuna favors clan autonomy and distrusts reliance on Konoha’s leadership 2 5 18 26 447.
He assigns Uchiha Ci to the Valley of Hell mission after initially dismissing him as an unremarkable genin. On the journey, Setsuna recognizes Ci’s shurikenjutsu, teaches him Fire Release applications, and grows protective of him. When Ci is trapped in a volcanic battlefield, Setsuna returns to save him and uses a dangerous forbidden sword technique. A message later confirms that he survived 3 10 11 16 24 26.
Setsuna continues to train Ci and attempts to pass his Mangekyō ability to him through a Transcription Seal. During the war, he uses his Sharingan against the Eight-Tails and fights the Third Raikage. His apparent death is later revealed to have been concealed from Ci as part of a clan plan to provoke Ci’s eye awakening 219 224 256 266 373 440.
Repeated use of Amenotachikara costs Setsuna his sight and memories, including his bond with Ci. Unaware of that relationship, he advances a plan to make Ci clan patriarch and strengthen his eyes through emotional trauma. Fugaku exposes and challenges the plan. When Ci returns, Setsuna recognizes him as a boy he once watched by the Naka River and leaves the meeting in guilt 441 443 448 449 452.

His judgment changes after Amenotachikara erases his memories of Ci. Still committed to the clan but no longer remembering why he trusted Ci, Setsuna treats him as a source of power to cultivate. Learning whom he used as a pawn leaves him visibly guilt-ridden 449 452.
