Zi Yan was separated from her father, Dragon Emperor Zhu Kun, when he left her outside the Tou She Ancient Emperor's Tomb before becoming trapped within it. She spent nearly a thousand years without him, including years of wandering and living in the mountains. 183 321

She eventually came under the care of Su Qian at Jia Nan Academy, who gave her the name Zi Yan. Her human appearance resulted from accidentally consuming Shaping Grass with insufficient transformative power: she could maintain a human form but could not return to her dragon body. 171 182
