Background / History

Nina lived in an orphanage with congenital insensitivity to pain. Unable to feel the warmth of Sakura’s hand and convinced that she was a monster, she initially responded to Sakura’s sudden offer of friendship with confusion and fear. Sakura nevertheless insisted that Nina was her friend. 265 266

Sakura repeatedly visited Nina, giving her a maple-leaf bookmark and accepting her preferred relationship: Nina wanted Sakura to be her “Sister,” not her owner. Their visits gradually changed the orphanage’s atmosphere and gave Nina a source of warmth and security. 273 274

After Sakura expressed a wish to adopt her, Xiaoyue adopted Nina and brought her into their home. Nina quickly became attached to Sakura and feared being abandoned, while Xiaoyue came to regard her as her genuine daughter rather than a responsibility entrusted to her. 266 279 286

Sakura devoted extensive research to curing Nina’s condition. Gene-repair treatments, Ara-Kami Cells, and later procedures improved Nina’s body, rapidly advanced her growth, and ultimately restored her ability to feel pain. Nina later enrolled at Cangyu Academy alongside Sakura. 295 307 311
