Background and History

Founding and early development

Hashirama Senju founded Konoha after using his strength to end the Warring States Period. Formerly hostile shinobi clans were invited to settle together, abandon old grudges, and rely on one another as members of a shared village. 2

Early Konoha was small and hastily built, with crude structures reflecting the instability of its formative era. Its initial survival depended heavily on Hashirama's prestige and military power. 2 29

Tobirama's consolidation policies

Tobirama Senju sought to make loyalty to Konoha supersede loyalty to individual clans. The Senju Clan led this effort by dispersing its members across the village; future descendants were expected to abandon the Senju surname and integrate entirely into Konoha. 29 35

The Uchiha Clan was treated differently. Because of Tobirama's fear that another Madara Uchiha could emerge, the clan was kept together under close surveillance rather than dispersed. After Hashirama's death, Tobirama placed the Uchiha in the Konoha Military Police Force, assigning them to guard prisons and settle civilian disputes while separating them from Konoha's regular armed forces. 2 58

Growth into a major village

Ten years after its founding, Konoha had become a prosperous town. Its streets were orderly and lined with colorful buildings and shops; the Hokage Building and a rock-wall statue of Hashirama dominated the village skyline. Population growth accompanied its increasing reputation. 45

Wars, scandal, and internal decline

During the First Shinobi World War, Konoha fought Hidden Sand Village before defending against Hidden Stone and Hidden Cloud. Wounded Konoha Ninja were sent back to Konoha Hospital for treatment by Shirou Emiya. 58

Konoha's use of the Impure World Reincarnation to revive Shirou became an international scandal. Other villages accused Konoha of exploiting Shirou's kindness and disturbing the dead; the resulting loss of honor damaged its diplomatic standing. 64 68

The village later suffered heavily in the Second Shinobi World War, at one point sending newly graduated Ninja School students to the battlefield. Konoha's leadership considered using Hashirama's cells for human experimentation, while Sarutobi Hiruzen banned further use of Impure World Reincarnation and sealed off Shirou's Crystal Coffin. 77 78

Long-standing hostility between Konoha's leadership and the Uchiha Clan ended with the clan's massacre, an event Sarutobi Hiruzen regarded as a severe loss despite removing a persistent internal crisis. 93

Akatsuki crisis and reconstruction

The Chunin Exams became the setting for a major crisis involving One-Tail Shukaku, Akatsuki, Hidden Sand Village, and Orochimaru. The incident ultimately cost Konoha its Third Hokage, Sarutobi Hiruzen. 157 182

Shirou Emiya and Akatsuki later attacked Konoha, leaving the village in ruins. By the time Naruto Uzumaki returned from Mount Myōboku, Konoha had been rebuilt and was preparing to cooperate with the other great villages against Akatsuki. 195 205

New Nation agreement

After the Infinite Tsukuyomi was undone, Shirou presented the Five Kage with a surrender agreement establishing a single country to govern the Shinobi World. The agreement abolished the authority of Daimyo and nobles, centralized land and wealth, and reduced the shinobi villages to militarized organizations without independent fiscal authority or Ninja Schools. 232

Tsunade signed on Konoha's behalf, bringing the village into the New Nation despite her objections to the terms and Madara Uchiha's dominance. 232 233
