Background

Madara was the former head of the Uchiha Clan and Hashirama Senju's closest friend and greatest rival. Their final battle left Hashirama gravely wounded and appeared to end with Madara's death, but Madara had prepared Izanagi and a Transcription Seal in advance to negate his death. He concealed a Shadow Clone in his coffin, sacrificing the sight in Izuna's eye to survive undetected. 8

After escaping, Madara implanted Hashirama's flesh into himself to pursue the “Power of All Things.” The transplant granted him Hashirama's regenerative ability and Wood Release, but did not immediately satisfy his goal; his search eventually led him to the Rinnegan's connection to combined Uchiha and Senju power. 30 41

He rejected Hashirama's vision of peace, declaring that the Shinobi World would inevitably return to war and that only his own path was correct. Before his later death, he entrusted his Rinnegan to Nagato and selected Obito Uchiha as his successor for the Eye of the Moon Plan. 56 76 83

Personality

Madara is intensely proud, confident in his own judgment, and dismissive of opponents he considers beneath him. He approaches battle with enthusiasm rather than caution; even amid Akatsuki's crises, he takes pleasure in fighting Hashirama and calls it the only truly interesting battle in the world. 186 203

He is also patient and calculating. His escape from death, use of a decoy corpse, cell transplantation, and long-term cultivation of a Rinnegan successor show a willingness to sacrifice years and irreplaceable assets for a larger objective. 8 76

Despite his harshness, Madara is unusually tolerant of Sasuke. Sasuke's resemblance to Izuna leads Madara to view him as the last Uchiha he should protect, and he personally trains the boy while pushing him toward greater strength. 189 190
