Background / History
Clark was raised on the Kent farm in Smallville by Martha and Jonathan Kent. Martha and Jonathan had intended to adopt from a welfare home, but Clark instead arrived as though their prayer for a child “from the moon” had been answered. Jonathan later died, leaving Clark and Martha to maintain the farm together. 34 247
Before openly acting as a hero, Clark concealed his abnormal strength and senses while working at a Smallville gas station. His hearing and vision allowed him to observe events as far away as Gotham, including Duncan’s assault on the Court of Owls, but he avoided using those gifts openly. 34 251
During the Washington invasion, Martha encouraged Clark to leave Smallville and pursue the path he wanted. He joined the Duncan Manor group’s mission despite worrying about leaving his mother behind, publicly disclosing his strength, speed, enhanced senses, and painful heat vision. 247 250
Clark later discovered his Kryptonian origins through the spacecraft brought to Earth with him and an ancient ship hidden beneath the North Pole. Jor-El’s projection identified him as Kal-El and confirmed that Krypton had been destroyed; Clark learned that he might be one of the last surviving Kryptonians. 384 387 389
Personality
Clark is compassionate, anxious about the consequences of his power, and deeply protective of civilians. He initially suppresses his abilities out of fear and uncertainty, but Martha’s support and life at Duncan Manor give him a place where he no longer needs to hide. 247 384
His morality often conflicts with Duncan’s brutality. Clark believes responsibility belongs primarily to commanders and decision-makers rather than ordinary soldiers or civilians, and he is prepared to oppose Duncan to prevent collective punishment. 261 478
Clark is also cautious about Kryptonians as a whole. Before entering the Arctic ship, he feared finding fellow Kryptonians who might expect him to help conquer Earth; later, he remains concerned that unknown clansmen could endanger the planet. 387 390
Abilities & Skills
Kryptonian Physiology
Clark possesses the physical gifts of a Kryptonian, though his power develops gradually rather than appearing fully mastered from the beginning.
- Possesses superhuman strength sufficient to fight the Hulk, defeat Wild Hunt soldiers, and overpower Namor. 356 402 456
- Has exceptional durability; he can leap from aircraft without a parachute and withstand prolonged combat against Hawkman, Hawkgirl, and Doctor Fate’s forces. 253 257 260
- Moves at extreme speed, rapidly clearing battlefields and reaching emergencies ahead of conventional responders. 356 455
- Earth’s yellow sun enhances Kryptonian bodies; Clark’s later awakening demonstrates that he can access more of this potential. 456 465
Super Senses
Clark’s sight and hearing extend over vast distances, allowing him to perceive danger far beyond his immediate surroundings.
- Can see and hear events in Gotham while living in Smallville. 251
- Can detect deception through heartbeat, pulse, and blood-flow changes. 418
- Used his senses to monitor Gotham and observe Duncan’s actions firsthand. 251
- The Washington Spire interfered with his hearing, leaving his senses unreliable during the operation. 253
- His tendency to listen in on dangerous conversations can expose him to mental threats, such as Mad Hatter’s hypnosis. 365
Heat Vision
Clark’s eyes can generate destructive heat, though the ability initially causes him pain and is difficult for him to control.
- He described heat vision as one of his abilities during the Washington mission. 250
- His confrontation with the Hulk triggered a sensation of intense heat building behind his eyes, revealing a deeper latent power. 402
- His heat vision is later recognized as one of his defining Kryptonian powers. 429
Flight
Clark initially relied on powered armor for aerial mobility, but awakened natural flight during the Los Angeles fire.
- Could not fly during the Washington operation and early Arctic expedition. 251 387
- Took flight without the Battle Armor amid his anguish over the Los Angeles disaster. 455 456
- His natural speed in flight exceeds the armor’s capabilities. 456
Combat and Rescue Work
Clark combines raw physical power with a strong focus on civilian protection.
- Secured a landing area in zombie-infested Washington and provided cover for Floyd Lawton and Victor Stone. 253
- Repeatedly charged Doctor Fate’s lightning to distract him during the Washington battle. 257
- Helped Bruce free Arkham Asylum patients from Mad Hatter’s control and identify individuals who could pose further danger after being calmed. 365 366
- Secretly rescued more than two hundred people from disasters across several cities, including gunfights, fires, stampedes, and a stranded cat. 384
- Entered a S.H.I.E.L.D. academy under Hydra control to rescue detained students and professors. 418

- Bruce Wayne / Batman — Friend and regular partner. Bruce is protective of Clark but also prepares for the possibility that Kryptonians may threaten Earth. 384 387

- General Zod — Kryptonian general who arrived on Earth seeking Clark and the Codex of Life. Clark attempts to mediate between Zod’s people and Earth. 459 473
