Background / History

Downton was operating a community supermarket in his original world when a thunderclap transported him to Gotham. Believing a world without publicly known superheroes to be safer, he initially planned to leave for Metropolis, then Washington, and eventually Switzerland. His plan ended when the bus he boarded was caught in a gang war and destroyed by an explosion, killing him for the first time. 1

His resurrection changed his priorities. Instead of fleeing Gotham, Downton sought revenge on those who had used civilians as cover during the firefight. He began attacking Russian and Italian mobsters indiscriminately, quickly gaining a reputation as an unpredictable, seemingly immortal gunman. 1 3

Downton later discovered that the deaths he experienced could strengthen him. By the time he eliminated Dimitrov and Sabatino, this potential had developed into a stable talent that allowed him to extract power from death itself. 27 39

Appearance

Downton is a tall Asian man with a muscular, athletic build, standing approximately 1.86 meters tall. His physical appearance becomes increasingly imposing as his death-powered physique develops. 4 5 49

  • Broad chest and visibly developed musculature. 4
  • Initially described as approximately 1.86 meters tall. 5
  • Often appears amid flames after dying or teleporting. 3 40 226
  • Has worn expensive clothing, tactical gear, casual jeans and a white undershirt, and stolen or improvised outfits. 6 46 48
  • Once slicked his messy hair back with blood after brutally assaulting a civilian. 41

Personality

Downton is reckless, theatrical, and intensely self-assured. He treats danger, death, and violence as opportunities to test himself, often taunting armed opponents or law enforcement rather than avoiding them. His immortality and rapid growth leave him increasingly dismissive of ordinary threats. 3 39 49

He is also opportunistic and persuasive. During his bank robbery, he turned security guards, staff, and customers into willing participants by appealing to greed and self-interest. He similarly recruits and rewards useful people in Gotham’s underworld. 7 12 31

Despite his cruelty, Downton occasionally displays selective generosity or restraint. He gave Bartel money and a future offer of employment, allowed the waitress and her boyfriend to keep stolen vehicles, and avoided killing a man in front of the man’s young child—though he still maimed the father. 12 41 54

Downton sees Gotham as a city to be conquered rather than saved. He frames himself as a force capable of making Gotham’s powerful “retract their talons and fangs,” while openly planning to make the city his kingdom. 38 63
