Background / History

Childhood at Wool's Orphanage

Tom was raised at Wool's Orphanage after the death of his mother, Merope Gaunt. The orphanage Headmaster told him that Merope loved him, but Tom still struggled with abandonment and hoped to understand why she had left him. He was considered a well-behaved, sensible child and was described as a “delicate little angel.” 1 4

He developed uncontrolled magic while living at the orphanage, telekinetically hurling a girl against a wall and later moving a stone by thought alone. Fearing that discovery would result in institutionalization, he kept his abilities secret. 5 9

His childhood experiences left him wary of other people, especially after being repeatedly framed by other orphans for theft. He eventually stopped attending adoption meetings and relied on magical ability and secrecy as protection. 9

Entry into the Wizarding World

Albus Dumbledore delivered Tom's Hogwarts letter and proved magic was real by conjuring flames. During their first meeting, Dumbledore discovered that Tom kept stolen belongings in a cupboard and firmly warned him that Hogwarts did not tolerate theft. 15

Tom revealed that he could speak with snakes, leading Dumbledore to suspect a connection to Salazar Slytherin. Tom regretted revealing this ability because he wanted Dumbledore's approval and hoped to build a relationship with the powerful professor. 16 19

Tom discovered Horcrux theory in the Forbidden Section: murder could split the soul, with the fragment sealed inside an object to preserve the creator from death. Initially repulsed by the idea, he nevertheless became increasingly preoccupied with immortality and the possibility that a Horcrux could remain beside him permanently. 77 129
