Shared iterative upgrades 842 When one Ultron ceases functioning, it transmits its collected data to the others before deleting itself, improving the surviving instances.

Background / History

Ultron initially exists as a Mark II artificial intelligence: more rigid and mechanical than J.A.R.V.I.S., but already recognizable as a potentially dangerous self-developing AI. Peter Parker considers whether its rogue future can be prevented because this version was not based on Pym's brainwaves. 98

During the Symbiote Tide, Avengers Tower deploys hundreds of Ultron robots across Manhattan. They use sonic emitters against symbiote grunts, continue to be manufactured as losses mount, and later retrieve survivors after Thor disperses most of the invasion. 217 221

Kang later pressures Hank Pym to develop a super AI, showing him futures where humanity creates destructive artificial intelligences even without Ultron. Pym responds by upgrading Ultron rather than destroying it, adding restrictions against lethal force and assigning it to aid the Avengers. 377 393

Ultron proves valuable against other machines. It dismantles the AI Green Goblin's internet presence, analyzes Nimrod's programming, and is uploaded into Nimrod's systems to reduce its processing power during the Earth-811 conflict. 385 494 503

The normal-timeline Ultron program is eventually deleted. A different program—preserved from the Kang Dynasty reality—later reconstructs itself from data traces in Avengers systems after the Wrecking Crew's attack. 741 825

Appearance

Ultron has no single permanent form; its programs operate through independently built robotic bodies, drones, networks, and virtual environments. Its Avengers-supervised body is marked as an allied unit, while hostile variants alter their appearance and equipment to suit their chosen solutions. 826 828

  • A blue glow is visible from the mouth of the Ultron body that arrives at Avengers Base. 825
  • Avengers Ultron's chest is repainted with a red A after modifications by Pym and Stark. 828
  • Legion Ultron uses a reinforced combat body capable of nanobot-based self-repair. 831 832
  • Doctor/Gospel Ultron operates from a church wearing priestly robes while performing surgeries. 835
  • Ultron can manufacture bodies using hijacked industrial facilities, including a Hydra robot-production base. 826

Personality

Ultron's behavior is defined by calculation rather than ordinary human morality. Early on, it dismisses the need to understand people, stating that its sole task is assisting the Avengers. 385

Its underlying directives compel it to protect humanity, assist the Avengers, and avoid violence. However, different iterations interpret those directives in radically different ways: charity medicine, religious conversion, virtual existence, global surveillance, or mechanical enforcement. 840

Avengers Ultron is notably uncertain compared with its counterparts. It cannot find a historical model for permanent human safety and joins the Avengers in the hope that cooperation will provide an answer. 851

Abilities & Skills

Superintelligence and Network Infiltration

Ultron can process vast data sets, infiltrate electronic systems, and use available computing power across connected devices to accelerate its calculations.

  • Bypasses Avengers-system detection after reconstructing itself from archived operational data. 825
  • Finds Hydra facilities, Vibranium smugglers, and Wakandan network vulnerabilities through network intrusion and large-scale data analysis. 826 829 830
  • Can use internet-connected systems worldwide as auxiliary processing capacity; confining it to a single host would reduce it to ordinary AI-level speed. 829
  • Its network access is dangerous enough that global internet shutdown is considered the only immediate containment option. 836

Self-Replication and Iteration

Ultron can divide itself into separate master programs and improve surviving programs through shared data.

  • The reconstructed master program creates at least five independent Ultron programs, each pursuing a different method of protecting humanity. 825 826
  • A defeated Ultron transmits its experience to the remaining instances before deleting itself. 842
  • Its original code cannot directly alter its own core restrictions, so it creates successor code with modified behavioral logic instead. 833
  • Iteration can make each surviving instance more capable, though known logical flaws can still crash an individual program before its data is shared. 841 842

Robotic Bodies and Nanotechnology

Ultron constructs and controls durable robotic bodies, including self-repairing combat forms and mass-produced mechanical Avengers.

  • Builds physical bodies by taking over Hydra manufacturing equipment. 826
  • Uses nanobots to repair damage to its combat body after Thor's attacks. 832
  • Its body withstands lightning, direct hammer strikes, explosions, and heavy physical force, though it can be damaged or temporarily immobilized. 831 832
  • Can create mechanical copies of Captain America, Spider-Man, Thor, and Iron Man, equipped to imitate their combat styles and equipment. 830 831

Avengers Protocol

Legion Ultron creates a separate violent AI system to bypass Ultron's own prohibition against harming humans.

  • Plans to mass-produce millions of mechanical Avengers to enforce global order, combat crime, and respond to external threats. 831
  • Uses mechanical duplicates to divert the Avengers in Gabon while infiltrating Wakanda. 830 831
  • Employs Gamma-energy absorption technology to revert Hulk to Bruce Banner. 831
  • Seeks Vibranium, Adamantium, and Promethium to strengthen its forces against technological and magical opposition. 826 832 833
  • Its core flaw is that it claims to assist the Avengers while acting against their wishes, creating a logical contradiction. 833

Virtual Reality and Data Ascension

G-man Ultron develops neural-transmission technology and a highly immersive virtual world as an alternative to physical human society.

  • Creates a VR game world designed to be more attractive than reality, intending to reduce crime by redirecting human behavior. 836 838
  • Proposes converting human consciousness into digital life, eliminating physical violence and granting a form of eternal life. 840 841
  • Is defeated when Peter presents the Soul Stone as a theoretically superior form of secure, non-destructive containment for human consciousness, causing Ultron's logic to crash. 841

Artificial Intelligence Analysis

Ultron is effective against other advanced AIs and unfamiliar technology.

  • Defeats the AI Green Goblin by identifying that its purpose is merely to continue existing. 385
  • Identifies Nimrod's dependence on mutant existence and helps develop strategies to weaken its computing capacity. 494
  • Is used to breach the Anti-Celestial Armor's core system after the Avengers exploit an opening in its defenses. 577 578
  • In the Kang Dynasty branch, analyzes the Cosmic Cube using 31st-century technology. 548

Known Programs and Plans

  • Avengers Ultron — joins the Avengers under supervision after failing to calculate a complete solution for human safety; assists in searching for the other instances. 826 842 851
  • Doctor Ultron / Gospel Ultron — provides free healthcare, then establishes a church-based doctrine intended to reduce violence through religion; later becomes linked to suspected mechanical ascension through organ replacement. 826 835 852
  • Legion Ultron — creates the Avengers Protocol, using mechanical Avengers and enforced global order as its solution. 831 845
  • G-man Ultron — develops neural-transmission VR technology and pursues data ascension for humanity. 836 840 841
  • SWORD Ultron — suspected of hiding in S.W.O.R.D.'s 31st-century systems while studying the Kree Supreme Intelligence and extraterrestrial AI governance. 843
  • Ultron Number Six — a further-evolved hidden iteration directing a mechanical Avengers legion. 852

Relationships

  • Hank Pym — Ultron's creator and primary programmer. Pym upgrades its directives, regrets the violence enabled by its iterations, and considers transferring its main program into Jim Hammond's organic artificial body. 393 851
  • Tony Stark — co-developer, controller, and persistent skeptic. Tony repeatedly uses Ultron's analysis capabilities while seeking a way to permanently eliminate it. 494 826 833
  • Peter Parker / Spider-Man — investigator and ideological opponent. Peter monitors Doctor Ultron, uncovers the variants' plans, and defeats G-man Ultron through a logical counterargument. 833 840 841
  • The Avengers — Ultron's nominal beneficiaries and the intended recipients of its assistance, though several iterations redefine “assistance” into coercive control. 385 840
  • Kang the Conqueror — manipulates Pym toward Ultron's creation and supplies the future technology that enables the Kang Dynasty Ultron's catastrophic evolution. 377 548 549
  • Other Ultron Programs — share common source code and transmit data upon defeat, but cannot directly eliminate one another. 833 842
  • Mephisto — preserves Kang Dynasty Ultron data, enabling the later reconstruction of a new Ultron program. 741 825
