History

Formation and Independence

The Avengers' founding members fought in the Battle of New York. In its aftermath, Tony Stark proposed the New Avengers Initiative: an expansion plan intended to build a defense force capable of repelling a future interstellar invasion rather than relying on only five heroes. 5 15

The team operates independently after separating from S.H.I.E.L.D. This independence creates friction with Nick Fury and the U.S. government, which develops the Thunderbolts and later the American Avengers as alternatives or contingencies. 15 177

Early Expansion

Kang Dynasty
