Background / History

Original novel fate

In the novel remembered by Lin Qi, Lin Yun is Lin Qi's talented illegitimate younger sister. Her mother is killed, leaving her dependent on the Lin family, where she suffers contempt and abuse because of her birth. Her extraordinary aptitude is revealed during Tianyi Sect recruitment, after which she becomes a disciple of a Nascent Soul True Monarch. 1

That original account has Lin Yun publicly sever ties with the Lin family, suppress its development, and ultimately allow evil cultivators to destroy it. She later reaches Late Mahayana, becomes the first cultivator of the Cangwu Realm to break through the void, and ascends. 1

Lin family and adoption

Lin Jue brings Lin Yun and her mother into the Lin family shortly before Lin Qi leaves for Tianyi Sect. Lin Yun's mother soon dies from illness; Lin Jue is absent under punishment and later becomes a monk, leaving Lin Yun without support inside the family. Her resentment toward the Lin family grows from her mother's death, the family's treatment of her, and the humiliation she experiences there. 3 155

At Lin Qi's direction, Great Aunt Lin arranges Lin Yun's adoption by the Ji family of Wu City. Lin Yun initially behaves meekly as Ji Yun, while the Ji couple treat her as their daughter. Their son, Kuan'er, later accompanies her to Tianluo Mountain and returns only as a disfigured corpse; Lin Yun is missing soon afterward. 156 275 276

The Ji couple later present evidence linking Lin Yun to hidden evil cultivation, including Spirit Stone remnants that identify her through a tracking formation. Lin Qi's investigation confirms that Lin Yun had secretly cultivated and absorbed residual souls with a Soul Summoning Banner, though it also shows that Rong Shi—not Lin Yun—killed one evil cultivator connected to the evidence. 276 277

Tianyi Sect and severing ties

Lin Yun reaches the summit of the Immortal Ascension Ladder, where the manifestation of a Three-Legged Golden Crow confirms her exceptional bloodline. She requests acceptance into the Sect Master's faction, then publicly severs her ties with the Lin family of Desolate City. 191 192

Her declaration alarms the sect's senior cultivators, who see her extreme resentment and uncompromising temperament as a threat to her future cultivation. Lin Yun nevertheless becomes the Sect Master's disciple and gains considerable attention within Tianyi Sect. 192 527

Rong Shi and the evil path

Rong Shi, an Upper Realm remnant soul, resides within Lin Yun's spatial artifact. He contracts with her after obtaining a fragment of his life-bound Chen Jiao Sword, enhancing her combat ability in exchange for her aid in restoring his strength. 244

Their partnership is founded on mutual use rather than trust. Lin Yun learns concealment and disguise techniques from Rong Shi, infiltrates evil cultivator forces, and enters Black Sand Rock; when her disguise fails, she severs an arm to escape. 249

Lin Yun later becomes increasingly suspicious of Rong Shi's motives, while Rong Shi grows dissatisfied with her impulsiveness and considers replacing her with Lin Qi as his host. 249 464

Blood Demon Sea and declining fortune

Lin Yun enters the Blood Demon Sea and reaches its depths despite only being assessed as a late-stage Foundation Establishment cultivator. She becomes trapped in dense blood-red malevolent energy, yet forcibly breaks free and reaches for the Heavenly Spirit Scepter, the treasure suppressing the Blood Demon Sea and Blood Sea Samsara Array. 390 393 394

The Blood Demon Sea's influence leaves her increasingly feral and unstable. Lin Qi later observes that Lin Yun's Auspicious Purple Qi has fallen to less than half its former strength and become entangled with a dark aura, reflecting the karmic cost of her actions. 395 422

Flame Valley and final defeat

After leaving Tianyi Sect, Lin Yun and Rong Shi ambush cultivators traveling to Flame Valley. Her fixation on revenge against the Ning siblings escalates into the slaughter of an entire group of six disciples. 464

At Flame Valley, Lin Yun challenges Lin Qi directly. Lin Qi overwhelms her with the Scattered Phoenix Shadow Dance, and Tan Yueqing subsequently pierces Lin Yun's heart while seizing the Fire God Fruit. Lin Qi expects Lin Yun to survive because of her remaining fortune. 469 470

Rong Shi later activates the Fortune Wheel and forcibly elevates Lin Yun from Golden Core Great Perfection to Early Mahayana, intending to turn her into his subordinate while siphoning the greater share of the Wheel's stolen fortune. 719 720

In their final battle, Lin Yun uses Deer Slaughter, the Vermilion Bird, and Heaven and Earth Exotic Fire against Lin Qi. Lin Qi answers with the fourth layer of the Imperial Phoenix Seal, freezes Lin Yun completely, and shatters her body into ice fragments. 720 721

Personality

Lin Yun is intensely resentful, proud, and sensitive to humiliation. Her public severing of ties with the Lin family exposes the depth of her hatred, while sect elders view her extreme love-and-hate mentality as dangerous to her cultivation. 192

She is also highly vindictive and unwilling to accept disadvantage or coercion. Her distrust of Rong Shi intensifies whenever he pressures her, and she is unable to tolerate being overshadowed by Lin Qi in cultivation, reputation, or opportunities. 249 385

Despite her volatility, Lin Yun can be calculating and resourceful. She conceals her cultivation, infiltrates hostile groups, sets traps around the Fire God Tree, and uses the terrain of Flame Valley to injure Ning Sangye. Her obsession with revenge, however, repeatedly overrides long-term strategy. 223 249 465
