Nature and Customs

The Jianghu is the martial world inhabited by martial artists, sects, escort agencies, intelligence brokers, bandits, and other itinerant figures. A person's clothing, weapon, techniques, and reputation can immediately mark them as part of it. Ji Qing is recognized as a Jianghu martial artist by his cloak, basket, and long saber upon arriving at Mule Horse Town 4.

• Personal boundaries — Jianghu etiquette recognizes claimed space. When the Weiyuan Escort Agency shelters in the same ruined temple as Ji Qing, he draws a line and tells them not to cross it; Head Escort Han Jin accepts the boundary as a rule of the Jianghu 6.
• Non-involvement — Escort agencies may refuse to enter martial disputes even when fighting breaks out nearby. Han Jin explicitly states that the Weiyuan Escort Agency only escorts goods and does not involve itself in Jianghu conflicts 7.
• Deadly challenges — Drawing a weapon can turn a challenge into a matter of life and death. Ji Qing tells Ye Chunsheng that a person in the Jianghu cannot control their own fate once they draw a sword 57.
• Retaliation and factional pressure — Defeating a martial artist can provoke reprisals from their sect members or lead to reports being made to the authorities 57.
• Reputation as deterrence — A sufficiently fearsome name can end conflicts without combat. Ji Qing's reputation causes more than twenty martial artists to flee and makes three Second-Rate experts withdraw respectfully 35.

Reputation, Rumors, and Intelligence

Reputation is a major force within the Jianghu. Public stories can turn a fugitive into a notorious villain, a hero, or both, regardless of the truth.

• Rumors about the Liang City massacre portray Ji Qing as a man who murdered his parents, burned Ji Manor, and slaughtered his family; the authorities place a thousand-tael bounty on him 4.
• Listening Wind Tower sells intelligence and investigates valuable targets. Ji Qing's whereabouts become profitable information after the bounty is issued, and the tower traces him through the conspicuous fact that he is traveling with Ji Yao 5.
• Storytellers spread notable events widely. Ji Qing's pursuit of Ouyang Bo across a thousand li becomes a celebrated tale performed in packed teahouses 44.
• Public sentiment later shifts toward Ji Qing after his actions against Ouyang Bo, even while he remains on the Villain Ranking 44.
• By the time of the Demon Blade affair, Jianghu people no longer casually call Ji Qing a “Demon Lord”; his destruction of the Heavenly Mountain Sect and status as the foremost blade fighter make direct provocation unthinkable 95.
