Background / History

Ji Juechen was an exceptional student of the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy. Jing Hongchen personally approved his enrollment, allowing him to forgo Soul Guidance Device studies; he became chief of the Control Soul Guidance Department. His swordsmanship was considered personal and unlearnable by ordinary people. 102

Huo Yuhao sought him out after learning of his reputation. Ji Juechen sensed Huo Yuhao's Spiritual Detection and became engrossed when Huo performed copied Wudang Swordplay and Thirteen Swords of Shenmen movements, strengthening Ji Juechen's Sword Intent. 103 104

After Huo Yuhao directed him to Xu Jie, Ji Juechen traveled to Shrek City solely to challenge Xu Jie to a sword duel. Xu Jie exposed the limits of Ji Juechen's direct, unvarying attacks and introduced him to the principles of Tai Chi Sword: the balance of hardness and softness, yin and yang, and “having a sword as though swordless.” Ji Juechen immediately accepted Xu Jie as his master and began rebuilding his fundamentals under Qian Ran, his seven-year-old senior brother. 118 120

He later followed Xu Jie to the Body Sect, where his habitual challenges became infamous. He would seek duels from members at any time, but his sparring substantially improved the Body Sect's third-generation disciples' combat ability. 162

While defending the mountain village from Tang Hao and Ah Yin, Ji Juechen's sword was broken and his martial soul shattered. Unable to accept the loss, he became despondent, refused food and water, and withdrew from everyone around him. 205 223 Xu Jie eventually forced him to confront the broken sword and his failure, after which Ji Juechen resumed training and accepted Er Niu as a disciple. 253 261

Xu Jie and Huo Yuhao repaired his martial soul through Soul Forging Runes, Xu Jie's martial soul flame, Skyfall Meteorite metal, and experiments on damaged tool martial souls. Ji Juechen personally reforged the blade with a hammer, causing his six soul rings to fuse into a transparent Colorless Ring and setting him on an unconventional sword path. 276 277 278

Appearance

Ji Juechen is a thin, pale swordsman with long black hair and a consistently cold, detached demeanor. Following the destruction of his martial soul, nearly half of his hair turned white; later, he is commonly seen in white robes with his hair tied by a black ribbon. 103 223 469

  • Long black hair, often loosely flowing or tied behind his back. 103 118 469
  • Pale, frail-looking face and lean build. 103 280
  • Calm black eyes that become intensely focused when he encounters a worthy sword or opponent. 469 497
  • Frequently carries a black, gray, icy-blue, or ultimately silvery-white longsword, depending on the state of his martial soul and equipment. 103 336 469

Personality

Ji Juechen is defined by an all-consuming devotion to swordsmanship. His eyes and heart are described as containing nothing but swords; he ignores cautions, status, inconvenience, and danger whenever a duel or a new sword principle is involved. 118 120

He is blunt, quiet, and emotionally restrained. Even in defeat or pain, he generally remains calm, but his fixation on the sword leaves him vulnerable to despair when his blade fails or his martial soul breaks. 223 260 Once he regains purpose, he displays extraordinary endurance and resolve, repeatedly choosing to face heavenly tribulations alone. 279 280 418

Despite his battle mania, he is capable of responsibility and care. He protects the mountain village, teaches Er Niu, carries concern for Xiao Yun'er, and returns Bai Chenxiang's Soul Storage Stone to Ma Hongjun rather than exploiting it in combat. 205 261 420 599

Abilities & Skills

Sword Intent

Ji Juechen cultivated Sword Intent despite receiving no systematic sword training early in life. His original style relied on overwhelming sharpness, pressure, thrusts, and stabs; Xu Jie's instruction later gave his swordsmanship structure, variation, and balance. 120

  • Can fuse his presence with his sword, making man and blade seem indistinguishable. 120
  • Possesses numerous distinct Sword Intents, including heavy, sharp, ethereal, predatory, illusory, and killing-oriented variations. 279 336
  • His Sword Intent can pressure other swordsmen and cause their sword martial souls to resonate. 419 497
  • His swordsmanship inspired cultivation breakthroughs among the Proud Sword Douluo and multiple Proud Sword Sect disciples. 420

Colorless Ring

After reforging his broken martial soul, Ji Juechen's six soul rings fused into a transparent, colorless ring. It changes color according to the Sword Intent he manifests and serves as the vessel of his sword path. 278 279 336

  • Contains sword-shaped marks representing different Sword Intents. 279
  • Allowed him to recover cultivation and advance without attaching a conventional seventh soul ring. 279
  • Appears during his later tribulations and major sword techniques. 336 418

Heaven and Earth Resonance

Ji Juechen can use Sword Intent, aided by his longsword, to resonate with the Heaven and Earth Elemental Force. The Three-Eyed Golden Lion considered this an extraordinary achievement for a human and suggested it could enable the creation of a godhood. 419

  • Can conceal his aura until he appears ordinary and nearly undetectable, weakening the tribulation's response before he strikes. 280 419
  • Uses resonance to gather momentum for sky-cleaving sword attacks. 419 420
  • His path requires repeated Heaven's Condemnation lightning tribulations rather than ordinary cultivation methods. 418 421

Heavenly Lightning Tempering

Ji Juechen endures lightning tribulations as part of his sword path. Rather than avoid them, he uses them to temper his Sword Intent and martial soul. 279 280 468

  • Survived seven lightning strikes during his first documented tribulation, despite being reduced to a charred state. 280
  • Endured multicolored lightning that shifted the six marks and Sword Intents associated with his path. 468
  • Can transform into a sword while confronting powerful heavenly lightning. 468

Swordsmanship

Ji Juechen's combat style progressed from straightforward suppression to a complete sword system incorporating Xu Jie's teachings and his own insights. 120 162

  • Tai Chi Sword principles — learned the union of hardness and softness, yin and yang, and the importance of variation. 120
  • Terrain and weapon in harmony — used this principle to unleash a tribulation-cleaving Sword Ray. 420
  • Close-combat dominance — before reaching Soul Douluo, he was assessed as capable of contending directly with an ordinary Titled Douluo. 392
  • Martial soul restoration — his repaired martial soul was ultimately described as an ordinary sword with no distinguishing features: “just a sword, and nothing but a sword.” 497

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Skyfall Meteorite Sword / Broken Sword — Ji Juechen's original black sword martial soul; it was shattered by Tang Hao, later repaired and reforged through Soul Forging. 205 266 278
  • Yinhan Sword — an eighth-grade close-combat Soul Tool given by Xu Jie; it carried an evil, cold aura and shattered during Ji Juechen's later tribulation. 334 420
  • Ice Extreme Divine Crystal longsword — ninth-grade Soul Tool weapon forged for him; it was destroyed when he attacked Tang Hao, after which he formed an icy-blue ice sword. 468
  • Gray Sword Intent fragment — a fragment Ji Juechen entrusted to Xu Jie for Er Niu; it contained a sharp, forward-driving Sword Intent. 420

Relationships

  • Xu Jie — master and swordsmanship mentor. Xu Jie exposed the weakness in Ji Juechen's original style, accepted him as a disciple, and later led the effort to restore his martial soul. 120 276 277
  • Jing Ziyan — long-time companion and caretaker. She accompanies him, worries over his injuries and mental state, and recognizes his obsession with swordsmanship better than most. 118 120 223 282

  • Su Erniu — disciple. Ji Juechen initially refused him, but later accepted the boy and taught him swordsmanship and cultivation. 205 261 271
  • Dugu Lu — frequent sparring opponent and fellow prodigy. Ji Juechen challenged him immediately upon learning of his reputation. 121
  • Xiao Yun'er — someone Ji Juechen tried to protect and later sought to rescue; he asked Xu Jie to find her within half a year. 205 420 461
  • Tang Hao and Ah Yin — adversaries responsible for breaking Ji Juechen's sword and shattering his martial soul; Ji Juechen later wounded Tang Hao and destroyed his Clear Sky Hammer. 205 261 469
