Klein's Thoughts

Alice's explanation made Klein suddenly understand. Before he could continue speaking, Alice went on:

"I'm going to sleep for a while. Maybe for a very, very long time... Hmm, don't call me if there's nothing wrong. If there is something wrong, try not to call me either... When I wake up, I'll tell you what happened.

"I should wake up before 'birth'... I ought to be able to wake up before then—actually, I could wake up now if I wanted to? But babies really should get a good sleep..."

Klein nodded and agreed without hesitation. "Okay."

The surroundings sank into silence. Klein tried to Felt It Out, then tentatively opened his mouth and called:

"Alice?"

Of course, he used Loenese. Klein did not try to use a language that could stir the natural forces. He merely wanted to confirm whether Alice had fallen asleep, not genuinely wake her.
