Background
Alger entered the Tarot Club as an informed and wary source of occult intelligence. He explained information concerning the Blasphemy Slate and stated that he had disposed of a Psychology Alchemists informant by sinking them into the Sonia Sea. He also supplied the Club with knowledge of hidden organizations, the True Creator, and maritime affairs. 8 17 18
He became one of Mr. Fool's regular providers of Roselle's Diary pages, using the exchanges both to demonstrate usefulness and to build standing within the Tarot Club. His efforts occasionally carried financial risks, most notably when two diary pages turned out to have been written by Alice rather than Roselle. Alger accepted responsibility for the mistaken purchase. 33 75 355
Although affiliated with the Church of Storms, Alger privately sought the Acting Method and the Wind Blessed potion formula without involving the Church, indicating that he did not want its authorities to learn what he knew. His faith had also begun to waver by the time Alice suggested invoking the Lord of Storms against Amon. 63 131
Personality
Alger is cautious, analytical, and highly conscious of power imbalances. His uncertainty over Alice's identity leads him to investigate her past and consider increasingly extraordinary explanations for her connection to Mr. Fool, including the possibility that she is a True God walking the earth. 81 82
He is a pragmatic strategist willing to use deception and calculated risk when he considers the stakes severe enough. When Derrick faced a mission led by Elder Lovia, Alger proposed ways to evade it, including feigning injury or inducing controlled symptoms of losing control. He later urged Derrick to accept that sacrifice may be necessary to save the City of Silver. 104 518
Despite his commercial instincts and willingness to charge commissions, Alger shows restraint when it matters. He offered to help Alice seek someone capable of removing Amon's curse, comforted her fears about losing her humanity, and waived an intermediary fee during Emlyn's transaction. 203 204
